Toronto Raptors point guard Dennis Schroder has found himself on the bench since late December, a decision made by head coach Darko Rajakovic.

Schroder’s last start for the Raptors was on December 30, coinciding with the acquisition of Immanuel Quickley, RJ Barrett, and a 2024 second-round draft pick from the New York Knicks in exchange for O.G. Anunoby, Precious Achiuwa, and Malachi Flynn.

According to Michael Grange of SportsNet, Schroder, who signed with the Raptors in the summer, was not pleased with the move to the bench.

His decision to join Toronto was influenced by the opportunity to lead his own team, a prospect he missed while coming off the bench for the Los Angeles Lakers and the Boston Celtics in previous seasons.

Rajakovic explained the decision to start Gary Trent Jr. over Schroder, citing a strategic change the team had been considering. The move aimed to utilize Scottie Barnes more as a ball handler and have Schroder contribute to the second unit.

In response to questions about the change, Rajakovic emphasized the importance of Schroder’s role in organizing the second group.

This season, the 30-year-old Schroder maintains averages of 14.6 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 6.8 assists in 31.9 minutes per game.
