Spanoulis, Zisis and Bourousis announce international retirement

Greece legends Vassilis Spanoulis, Nikos Zisis and Ioannis Bourousis have announced their international retirements following their nation’s win over Latvia.

Spanoulis announced his decision to retire to the Greek media that had assembled in the mix zone in Lille on Thursday afternoon.

“I am retiring from the national team,” Spanoulis said. “All those years, we offered so many things, some times we were successful, other times we failed.

“I started playing for the national team since I was 17-years-old. This is life. It’s time for me to stop, it’s the right time for me to retire in order for the younger players to step forward. There is no need to say many things. I am proud of having played for Greece. There is no disappointment. We achieved our minimum goal, namely to qualify to the Olympic Qualifying Tournament.”

Shortly after Spanoulis’ decision, veterans Zisis and Bourousis also called time on their international careers, having joined the Greek senior ranks in 2004 and 2005, respectively.

Bourousis led Greece with 20 points in his final game.
