Kevin Durant on Victor Wembanyama comparison: “I don’t see anybody else in his game”

In a recent showdown between the San Antonio Spurs and the Phoenix Suns, Victor Wembanyama continued to shine, reaching a career-high 38 points and contributing to the Spurs’ 132-121 victory in their second consecutive win over the Suns.

During a postgame press conference, Suns’ star Kevin Durant was asked about the parallels drawn between him and the French phenom.

Durant acknowledged the shared slender physique but emphasized that Wembanyama is his own player, with unique attributes and playing style.

Wembanyama’s enthusiasm for the game, as witnessed on the court, through televised games, and in matchups against him, resonated with Durant, further highlighting the rookie’s individuality as both a player and a person.

Durant believes that Wembanyama, despite any potential influences from observing great players in the league, is set to carve out his own distinctive path in the NBA, making a mark different from anyone who has previously graced the court.

“I don’t see anybody else in his game,” Durant said. “We both skinny and I’m sure he said he watched me growing up, but he’s his own player.

“I’m sure he watched so many great players in the league and try to emulate just about everybody. You could tell in his enthusiasm for the game, you could tell that through the TV and playing against him.

“He’s his own player, person. He’s going to create his own lane. He’s much different that anybody who’s ever played. You can try to compare, but he’s going to carve out his own lane.”
