Reigning NBA MVP Joel Embiid’s recent commitment to Team USA over his home country, Cameroon, has left a mark on the basketball community. One person who has been closely watching this development is Victor Wembanyama, the No. 1 pick in this year’s draft.

Wembanyama, who has been representing France on the international stage, shared his thoughts on Embiid’s decision after a scrimmage with the San Antonio Spurs.

“I don’t really have an opinion; I’m just sad for Cameroon,” the 19-year-old forward said, per Tom Orsborn.

The commitment to Team USA means that Cameroon will not have their best player representing them on the international stage.

When asked if he was disappointed that Embiid didn’t choose to play for France, Wembanyama responded, “Not at all. If I have the opportunity, if I am selected, I will fight with other French people to win a title.”
