As EuroLeague and EuroCup gear up for the 2023-24 season, Euroleague Basketball has introduced a series of rule changes aimed at ensuring fairness for participants and clarity for fans.
One of the key changes is the addition of an extra coach’s challenge for each game. Head coaches will now have two challenges at their disposal, but they must use one within the first 38 minutes of the game to retain it. This adjustment is part of an effort to maintain the pace of the games.
To further streamline the game, referees will only be able to initiate foul reviews during the final 2 minutes of a game or the last 2 minutes of overtime. However, coaches can still utilize a challenge to initiate foul reviews at any point during the game.
Two new reviewable calls have been introduced. Coaches can now challenge whether a player was fouled in the act of shooting, as well as whether the shot clock should be reset when reviewing if the ball touched the rim. Referees, however, can only trigger these reviews in the final 2 minutes of regulation or overtime.
In a significant change, players or team staff members who leave the bench during on-court altercations will not be disqualified if they do not actively participate in the disturbance. This modification allows referees to review footage to confirm that bench players were not directly involved.
Additionally, all jump ball situations will now commence at the circle nearest to the spot where the preceding action took place, whether it’s the foul free-throw line or center court.
