Klay Thompson, the sharpshooting icon of the Golden State Warriors, is entering the final year of his current contract, set to make waves in the upcoming 2023-24 NBA season.

As Thompson’s future with the franchise hangs in the balance, Warriors owner Joe Lacob appears confident about extending their partnership.

Lacob’s recent appearance on The TK Show podcast, hosted by Tim Kawakami of The Athletic, shed light on the team’s intentions regarding Thompson’s contract. When asked if he expects Thompson to remain with the Warriors beyond the upcoming season, Lacob responded, “I do.”

Although discussions with Thompson’s agent have commenced, they are still in their early stages. Lacob emphasized the franchise’s desire to secure the guard’s presence for the long haul.

“I fully expect that we’ll have some substantial discussions soon sometime, and we’ll see if we can’t put something together that allows Klay to be here for a long time, which we clearly would like him to be,” he said.

Thompson has been a cornerstone of the Warriors’ success for over a decade. In the previous season, he averaged 21.9 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 2.4 assists in 33 minutes per game.

The situation mirrors that of Thompson’s teammate, Draymond Green, who faced uncertainties regarding his contract extension. However, the Warriors eventually reached an agreement with Green earlier this summer, highlighting the franchise’s commitment to retaining its core talents.
