Atlanta Hawks star Trae Young believes that not wanting to embarrass his idols was the reason why he only averaged 19.1 PPG back in 2018-19.

(via Gil’s Arena):

Josiah Johnson: “Does it hurt you to have to cook your idols sometimes? Do you look like, ‘Bro, I used to  idolize you. Now, I got to give you buckets.’ Do you ever feel bad about it? Or is it just, ‘Nah. I’m gonna embarrass you.’”

Young: “To be honest with you, I think that’s why I only averaged 18 points my rookie year (actually was 19). I was too much into that. Then I go from averaging that to almost 30 my second year. I think that was the biggest difference, it was just my confidence and how I looked at the game and every game I went into. So I think for me, I’m past that point, but you know you still get up when you play against a lot of dudes.”
