Grant Williams, the newly acquired power forward for the Mavericks, shared his candid thoughts on the intricacies of restricted free agency. In an interview with mavs.com, Williams expressed the difficulties associated with the process, emphasizing the waiting game involved in determining his next destination.

The 24-year-old forward acknowledged that unrestricted free agency provides more clarity, allowing players to have a better understanding of their options. In contrast, restricted free agency requires patience as teams have the opportunity to match offers or negotiate different terms. Williams described the experience as both interesting and nerve-wracking, with a mix of anticipation and uncertainty.

“Very difficult. Restricted free agency is terrible,” Williams said. “Unrestricted, you have a good understanding of where you want to go, but restricted, you’re pretty much in a waiting game.”

Despite the challenges, Williams expressed his appreciation for the free agency process, recognizing the excitement it brings while also acknowledging the nerves that come with it.

“You want to make sure you understand what the offers are but also understand that teams might match or a team might be asking for more than another team is willing to give. It’s definitely an interesting process. I still think free agency is a little bit fun, but also a little bit nerve-wracking.”

During the 2022-23 season, Williams averaged 8.1 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 1.7 assists in 25.9 minutes per game with the Celtics before being traded to the Mavericks in a sign-and-trade agreement.
