Italy had hoped that Paolo Banchero would play for the national team later this summer, but the reigning NBA Rookie of the Year decided to opt for the United States instead.

Italian Basketball Federation president Gianni Petrucci has voiced his disappointment regarding the Magic star’s choice to represent Team USA in the upcoming FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023.

In an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, Petrucci expressed his dissatisfaction with the lack of communication from Banchero regarding his decision.

“While it was his legitimate choice, he could have at least given us a call to communicate it. Instead, we found out about his decision through the media,” Petrucci said, via BasketNews. “Despite our agreements with his agency, he avoided meeting with coach [Gianmarco] Pozzecco during his recent visit to Milan.”

The Italian Basketball Federation president went on to express his feelings of betrayal, particularly in the context of basketball. He stated, “Betrayal, especially in basketball, is a strong word. Situations like this happen, and personally, I’ve become accustomed to it. However, he deceived us, and we had planned a significant commercial strategy around him. Now we need to transform this disappointment into positive energy, and I’m confident our coach will be able to do so.”

During his rookie season in the NBA, Banchero showcased impressive skills, averaging 20 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 3.7 assists in 33.8 minutes per game.

With Banchero’s decision to play for Team USA, Italy will now refocus its efforts and channel their disappointment into finding alternative strategies and opportunities. The Italians will take on Angola, Dominican Republic and hosts Philippines in Group A.
