Sofoklis Schortsanitis likely to leave Maccabi

Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv are reportedly not going to be extending Sofoklis Schortsanitis’ contract.

A team official informed Israeli journalist David Pick earlier today and the news broke on his Twitter account.

Schortsanitis’ apparent exit from the 2014 Euroleague champions will surely spark other clubs to court the 29-year-old center as they all look to freshen up their respective rosters for next season.

The Greek big man, nicknamed “Baby Shaq” has only started six of the 20 Euroleague games this season, averaging 6.7 points and 2.7 rebounds a game but has shown glimpses of what he can still do despite the drop in minutes.

Sofo’s finest game came against eventual Euroleague winners Real Madrid in round five of the Top 16 where in front of a packed crowd in Tel Aviv, he posted 17 points and eight rebounds as Maccabi won 90-86.

Unfortunately, Sofo has been unable to recreate that kind of form on a consistent basis and in the quarter-final playoff against Fenerbahce, played a total of 39:26 across the three games and only scored six points overall.

If Sofo does leave, as it is not confirmed by the club, he will depart having won a Euroleague title and the Israeli league and Cup competitions.
