Donovan Mitchell scored 71 points in the game against the Bulls, the highest number by an NBA player since 2006 when Kobe Bryant dropped 81.

However, a last two minutes report from the league officials revealed that he stepped over the free-throw line too early at the end of the fourth quarter and should have been called for a lane violation.

If the right call was made, there would have been no overtime and Mitchell would have finished the game with 56 points.

The Cavaliers will play the Suns next and Phoenix’s small forward Mikal Bridges sent a message to Mitchell ahead of the game.

“Hope he don’t try that shit next game,” Bridges said, per Duane Rankin. “I talked to him today. I sent him a lot of IG DMs. A lot of voice memos. Kept telling him, ‘Hey bro, don’t try to come get 80 tomorrow. Calm that sh*t down.'”

Mitchell is averaging career-high 29.3 points, 3.9 rebounds and 4.8 assists in 36.7 minutes per game this season.
