JAVALE MCGEE WAIVED BY THE SIXERS

The Philadelphia 76ers announced today the team waived JaVale McGee prior to midnight on Mar. 1, making him eligible to join a postseason roster.

The Sixers originally acquired McGee and Oklahoma City’s protected 2015 first-round pick from Denver on Feb. 19, 2015.

Sources told ESPN.com that the Sixers, after their loss Sunday night at Indiana, consented to waive McGee before the midnight deadline that makes McGee eligible to appear in the playoffs this season with another team.

ESPN.com first reported Sunday that the Sixers and McGee’s representatives had launched serious buyout talks.

Yet USA Today reported early Monday that McGee was able to secure his release from the Sixers without surrendering any of next season’s $12 million salary or what’s left of this season’s $11.25 million.

Once he clears waivers this week, McGee will become a free agent. He initially said upon being dealt to the Sixers that he did not want a buyout, but ESPN.com reported Sunday that McGee’s representatives were on the hunt to find a team interested in signing the 7-footer.

RIVERS: JORDAN TO BE DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Los Angeles Clippers coach Doc Rivers swears by it.

Via ESPN:

“He’s clearly the defensive player of the year,” Rivers said Sunday. “If anybody else gets that award, we need to have an investigation. … What he’s doing defensively, if he was doing that offensively, he would be recognized as the MVP or one of them, but because it’s defense, no one notices.”

Jordan started his 300th consecutive game on Sunday, the longest active streak in the NBA, but it wasn’t until Blake Griffin was sidelined with a staph infection in his right elbow three weeks ago that Jordan received the attention Rivers felt was long overdue for the Clippers’ 26-year-old center.

“He gets every rebound,” Rivers said. “And when he doesn’t get it, it takes two guys to keep him off and allows the other guys to get rebounds. He’s clearly very important for us.”

“We’re excited to tell the story of our team, our fans and our hometown with this new alternate uniform,” said Brian Byrnes, senior vice president of Sales and Marketing for the Thunder.

“We believe the uniform embodies the spirit of this city, with simple and forward-looking design elements that showcase the three letters that resonate in our arena and have come to represent our team and our community: OKC.”
