Israeli international Gal Mekel has signed a one-year deal with Nizhny Novgorod as the Russian club bolsters its chances of progression in the Euroleague Top 16.

Mekel’s one-year contract comes with an NBA-out clause if he so chooses this summer.

The 26-year-old left Maccabi Haifa in 2013 for the NBA, but during his time with the Dallas Mavericks and New Orleans Pelicans, Mekel has not looked settled, and fell out of the rotation with both teams.

In his two seasons as an NBA player, Mekel has only played 35 games, starting one and averaging 2.3 points a game.
