After four years as the head coach of the Japanese men’s national team, Julio Lamas has decided to move on after his contract expired.

The 57-year-old Argentine coach was at the helm since 2017 and led the team to the 2019 FIBA World Cup, their first appearance since 2006, as well as the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, their first Olympic appearance since 1976.

“After four years as the Head coach of the Japanese National Team, this journey has come to an end. It has been a wonderful and an unforgettable experience for me and my family. I would like to offer my gratitude to the players, Coaching Staff, and all JBA members and management and wish them all the best in the future. Arigato! [thank you]” he posted.

After this news, Tom Hovasse was named the new head coach by the Japanese Basketball Association.

Hovasse was previously the coach of the Japanese women’s national team.

This summer, he led them to a historic silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics.

It was their best-ever finish at the Olympic Games and their fifth-ever appearance.

Hovasse had been the coach of the women’s team since 2017.

Along with the Olympic silver medal this summer, he also led the team to a gold medal at the 2017 and 2019 FIBA Women’s Asia Cup.

Hovasse, 54, will now begin preparations with the men’s team for the FIBA World Cup 2023 Asian Qualifiers that tip-off in November.

Japan is already qualified for the 2023 FIBA World Cup as one of the host nations.
