Oscar Robertson dismisses criticism on Russell Westbrook: “Players don’t win championships by themselves”

Russell Westbrook is one of the most tantalizing guards of this era, becoming only the second player in the history of the game to finish multiple seasons with triple-double averages.

The first to do that was the great Oscar Robertson, who dismissed the criticism on Westbrook’s game and claimed that championships are won by teams, not players, in a recent interview with Marc Stein of the New York Times.

“… I think it’s ridiculous that some sportswriters criticize him because he has not won a championship. Players don’t win championships by themselves. You’ve got to have good management. You need to get with the right group of players.

Look at Brooklyn: Who could have done this years ago? How things have changed. It seems now that what’s happening in basketball, and I haven’t seen it happen in football yet, is players will get together and say, “Let’s go and play for this team, so we can win.” Years ago, you wouldn’t have thought of doing that.”

Westbrook is on pace to break Oscar Robertson’s record for career triple-double putting another great performance vs. Milwaukee on Wednesday.

The Wizards’ star guard finished the game with 29 points, 17 assists and 12 rebounds in a 134-135 loss to the Bucks.
