Wayns leaves Zalgiris due to an injury

With just a few days before the start of the new Euroleague campaign Lithuanian champions Zalgiris had to part ways with the newcomer Maalik Wayns.

Even though there were no signs of an injury during medical examinations in Kaunas, Wayns started feeling pain in his knee once the workload got heavier in training sessions.

Zalgiris medical staff prepared an individual training plan for the player and hoped to put Wayns back in action.

Last week Wayns returned to the States as his girlfriend was expecting his first child. He also took additional tests. After receiving results and considering the high amount games that he’ll have to play for Zalgiris in Euroleague and Lithuanian Basketball League as well as his future career Wayns decided to take a surgery.

Wayns had a knee surgery last November and was expecting to return to his best shape for the upcoming season.

Zalgiris GM Paulius Motiejunas confirmed that the club is now in search for a replacement who has experience playing in such level (Euroleague) and would be able to pull the team ahead when needed.

The reports in Lithuanian media suggest that Omar Cook, who finished last season with arch rivals Lietuvos Rytas, is having talks with Zalgiris.
