Zalgiris hands point guard duties to Maalik Wayns

Lithuanian champions Zalgiris Kaunas found a replacement for Justin Dentmon, who left the club to sign a contract in China.

The club announced via its official website the signing of Maalik Wayns for one season. The 23-year-old point guard arrives from NBDL side Rio Grande Valley Vipers.

“Having watched games in Las Vegas Summer League Maalik Wayns’s game was instantly noticeable. We are very happy that Maalik agreed to tie his future with Zalgiris”, Zalgiris Directos Paulius Motiejunas told the club’s website.

“Maalik Wayns controlled the team very well and wasn’t selfish as it’s usual in the Summer League. He distributed the ball well and was a true playmaker. He was leader in college, he has NBA experience, therefore, we think that he adapt in Europe too”.

Zalgiris will be the first team in Europe for Wayns. Since now he had two stints in the NBA with Philadelphia 76ers and Los Angeles Clippers.

Wayns went undrafted in 2012 but managed to earn himself a deal with Philadelphia 76ers.

Last season Wayns averaged 12.2 points and 4.2 assists per game in the NBDL.
