The NBA is fast approaching a period of player movement, with the 2019/20 season all wrapped up. And, as today’s sports news goes, the Cleveland Cavaliers and big man Andre Drummond are believed to be “far apart” as it pertains to an extension.

The Cavs acquired Drummond in a deadline-day trade for almost nothing last term and the plan was for him to play out the rest of the season so the team could determine whether or not he was a good fit. Unfortunately, that only turned out to be eight games as a result of the pandemic, yet both sides seemed keen on a long-term extension and Drummond appeared to be ready to pick up his $28.8 million option for 2020/21.

According to Cleveland.com’s Chris Fedor, the parties are far from agreeing a deal at the moment.

“The sides have been far apart in those preliminary discussions, sources say,” Fedor told fans in a Q&A. “The Cavs recognize Drummond’s talent but they are also honest about his flaws, especially in this pace-and-space era, where bigs like him are easy to attain… Drummond, meanwhile, wants to be compensated for bypassing a chance at 2021 free agency, when many teams will have significant cap space. Given the differing, current monetary views, an extension seems unlikely.”

There has been talk of the player being involved in a trade and Fedor claims multiple sources have indicated that the Cavs’ best option would be to trade him at the deadline, sending him to a contender with no financial commitment past the 2020/21 campaign.

It remains to be seen how things will work out between the parties, however.
