Five hundred years before Columbus sailed the ocean blue, a Native American woman may have voyaged to Europe with Vikings, according to a provocative new DNA study.

Analyzing a type of DNA passed only from mother to child, scientists found more than 80 living Icelanders with a genetic variation similar to one found mostly in Native Americans.

This signature probably entered Icelandic bloodlines around A.D. 1000, when the first Viking-American Indian child was born, the study authors theorize.

Historical accounts and archaeological evidence show that Icelandic Vikings reached Greenland just before 1000 and quickly pushed on to what is now Canada. Icelanders even established a village in Newfoundland, though it lasted only a decade or so.

The idea that a Native American woman sailed from North America to Iceland during that period of settlement and exploration provides the best explanation for the Icelanders' variant, the research team says.

"We know that Vikings sailed to the Americas," said Agnar Helgason of deCODE Genetics and the University of Iceland, who co-wrote the study with his student Sigridur Ebenesersdottir and colleagues. "So all you have to do is assume … that they met some people and ended up taking at least one female back with them.

As a Greek (right?) you should know that one famous Greek philosopher - Plutarch - dedicated essay for vegetarianism "On Eating flesh" back to ancient world. All Greek world was occupied with disputing about this ethical question. And that's not even real roots. The Hindu Upanishands (1000 BC) was the doctrine of reincarnation, so they opposed for easting meat (animals). Not too mention than many of great minds were/are vegetarians.

I have to say "vegetarianism" is one of current global modes, but in this case I could proudly call my self a poser

If people would at least eat meat normally (as much as it would make them fit), this world would be far better. And wasting is happening in everyday life because of the fact most people think normal food is meat and everything else is just addition to that (that's major bullshit).

And the most important tip - it's not even about killing or not killing, it's about the fact that meat industry fucks people asses everyday

Anyway. There's hundred of reasons to be vegetarians and you are free to ignore all of them at the same time.

Well.. Pretty much nothing can convince me cuz I eat no vegitables at all (unless u count potatos ) so if I'll stop eating meat that would leave me with.. Cheese and not many other things to eat

Meat helped cavemen socialise and grown their brains... so it has done good things too...

Of course industralising is bad for everything... not using electricity also makes the world a worse place, but we do it...

A funny out of subject thing: I got a vegetarian cousin... whenever she goes traveling, I ask her about the food. If she says "the food was great" I know it's not the place for me and probably sucks and when she says "it sucked" i know I will get some great food (meat) there...
