Turkey NT 2010

Quote:In-form Ilyasova has excited about hosting FIBA World Championship

MILWAUKEE (2010 FIBA World Championship) - There aren't many NBA teams that have been as good as the Milwaukee Bucks since January 27.

To put it bluntly, Ersan Ilyasova and Co have been on a tear, winning 15 of their 19 games in that time.

The 22-year-old power forward has been coming off the bench and playing around 23 minutes per game for Milwaukee, averaging 10.4 points, 6.3 rebounds per contest.

The NBA games are coming fast and furious, but there’s something else on Ilyasova’s mind.

He's got one eye on Ankara, which is where he and Turkey will face Greece, Russia, China, Puerto Rico and the Ivory Coast in Preliminary Round play at the FIBA World Championship.

Ilyasova knows it will be a pivotal time for basketball in Turkey.

National team success will win new fans to the sport and reward those supporters who have stuck by the players through thick and thin.

It is also a great opportunity to remind everyone of what a wonderful country Turkey is.

"I am sure that the championship that we will play in our home will be very exciting," Ilyasova said.

"I want to win a medal in my own country with our fans.

“Organizing this is very important for Turkish basketball."

Turkey have plenty of cause for optimism because in their first five games at last year's EuroBasket in Poland, they were the best team in the competition.

Included in that tournament-opening run were victories over Spain and Serbia, the eventual EuroBasket finalists.

After falling for the first time in a 69-67 defeat to Slovenia – another side to reach the Semi-Finals, Turkey suffered Quarter-Final heartbreak with a 76-74 loss to bitter rivals Greece.

They ended up losing to France and Russia in the Classification Round to come in eighth.

"We think we played well at the last European Championship in Poland," said Ilyasova, who was arguably the team's best player.

He averaged 16.1 points and 7.3 rebounds per game.

"We could have won a medal but we were very unlucky,” he said.

"We want to atone for this at the FIBA World Championship."

Is that positive or negative in your opinion? I'm sure it's quite debatable. and I'm not so sure he'll join the NT <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Tongue' />

I dont know too. I remembered the last match Memo played in NT. He was reckless and has anormal behaviours! He is talented player but he cannot forget that he is only a part of team.

I dont say to win all the matches. But always fight! If you lose the match, it isnot important. Please Fight. <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

Good point. After Eurobasket 2009 I'm pretty sure Hedo understood what i takes for a victory in FIBA games and I'm not sure Memo understands the same. More over, IMO, Okur's ability to shoot from down town is exactly what makes him dangerous at NBA while in FIBA tournaments perimeter game is way more intense and complicated and I found an impression that Okur simply can't do that there what he does in NBA. While Turkey has Hedo and Iliasova, I think Memo is not a need for Turkey NT, unless he won't play at his usual role and will play as low post player (and he isn't that good at this point).

Lots of big names and experienced player left out. I don't think Turkey can pull off another "Eurobasket 2001", but then again you never know.
Respect and thanks for everything:

Alvertis, Bodiroga, Jasikevicius, Radja, Wilkins, Vrankovic, Fotsis, Rebraca, Kattash, Gentile, Koch, Middleton, Kutluay, Rogers, Papadopoulos, Becirovic, Tomasevic, Siskauskas, Pekovic, Lakovic, Vujanic, Chatzivrettas, Maljkovic, Spanoulis and many more to follow in the near future.

Quote:Slovenian (or is he Bosniac? Turk? Janissary? Albanian?) international star of Fenerbahce Ulker, Emir Preldzic, is again in the spotlight of international competitions after he expressed his wish to now play for the Turkish National Team, after he had played for Slovenia youth NT and last year trying to play for Bosnia & Herzegovina senior NT.

The Bosnian born player has played for Slovenia U20 NT in both 2006 and 2007, being one of the most promising players of his generation in Slovenia. But after he made the jump to Euroleague side Fenerbahce Ulker something changed. After he was called to Slovenia NT summer camp before Eurobasket 2009 in Poland he refused to show up and instead gave an ultimatum to Slovenian Basketball Federation to allow him to play for Bosnia & Herzegovina NT instead.

Of course Slovenian Basketball Federation refused to allow him to do so, as that would be against FIBA rules. And now, almost a year later Preldzic has discovered his "Turkish roots" and now wants to play for the Turkish NT in the upcoming World Championship in a few months time. Could his actions be driven by the fact that he currently plays in the Turkish league and the coach who brought him there was Tanjevic, who happens to currently be the head coach of Turkey NT? Although no concrete proofs exist, the facts strongly hint it is the case.

This will make many sides happy. Fenerbahce Ulker will suddenly get an extra Turkish international player in their squad, will be able to sign an extra foreigner, the man who brought him to Fenerbahce Ulker will have another solution in his hands in the World Championship and Turkey NT will get another non-Turkish born player in their team for the years to come (Ilyasova anyone?).

The only factor standing in the way of this scandal is the Slovenian Basketball Federation. Rumours have it that the Turkish Basketball Federation will try to buy-off a clearance from their Slovenian counterparts. If Slovenian Basketball Federation gives in to this blackmail, only time will show.

One thing is certain, certain National Teams and Basketball Federations, can not just go around "buying" off future stars and FIBA must put a stop to it. They already rejected Bosnia & Herzegovina's motion for Preldzic last season, but will they be able to resist the pressure from Turkey, especially since the World Championship will take place in Turkey in less that 3 months?

Can someone tell me what this guy is at the end of the day? Bosnian? Slovenian? Cefur? Turk? Chinese? Maybe Estonian?
