USA NT 2010
#1
Via FIBA

Quote:The USA will face four of the world's best in the lead-up to the 2010 FIBA World Championship during the Global Community Cup Tour.

The news was announced by USA Basketball as they made their domestic and international training and exhibition game schedule available on Wednesday.

The Americans will face France at Madison Square Garden in New York on 15th August, before travelling to Madrid to take on Lithuania on 21st August and Spain on 22nd August. They will conclude their World Championship preparations in Athens on 25th August when they go up against Greece.

All of these games are part of the new Global Community Cup, which features a social responsibility element that will highlight USA Basketball's commitment to giving back to the communities they touch, in the USA and abroad.

"We set out to establish a very challenging line-up of exhibition opponents for our 2010 USA National Team Tour and we have accomplished that. In order to get our team as best prepared as possible for the 2010 World Championship we believe it is important to face top competition in challenging settings." said USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo.

"I'm sure these four exhibition games will be exciting and memorable events for all basketball fans," said USA head coach Mike Krzyzewski.

"As we begin the building of our national team for 2010-12, the first year is critical and in looking at our training and exhibition schedule this summer, we will face some very talented teams.

"France, Lithuania, Spain and Greece are all World Championship medal contenders and the training and the exhibition games that are ahead for the USA team will be critical to our preparations for the World Championship."

So far, if I remember correctly, Kobe Bryant and Dwyane Wade said they won't be playing this year.

Perkins probably won't play because he is injured.

Chis Paul and Deron Williams will be the only ones remaining from the Olympics. The rest of the team is new.

I think it all depends on Durant. IMO, other than Kobe and LeBron, he's the biggest talent the US has to offer. He's extremely dangerous and could dominate. Nobody in the competition can guard him with his height and athleticism. If he has a great tournament, the US become that much more dangerous. The most important factor for them though, as always, is chemistry. They obviously have the most talented squad, but if they don't connect well, they don't have a bunch of stars to fall back on like they did in the Olympics. It's going to be interesting to see how well they do, lucky for them that Spain and the rest are also missing some major players.

Ok, if you don't mind I'll give you a little breakdown of the players who highlighted and mentioned you were unfamiliar with. Only 5 of the players listed there even made the trip to Madrid last week. Stephen Curry, Eric Gordon, Derrick Rose, Russel Westbrook and
Danny Granger.

The rest of that list was "cut" during the the try out process.

Stephen Curry- Point Guard/shooting guard: An absolute lights out shooter. He became a national darling during the 2008 NCAA tournament, because he carried his small college all the way to within a shot of the vaunted Final Four. He moves brilliantly off ball, he can score in so many crafty ways. he is the son of Dell Curry who was one of the best 3 pt specialists in the NBA during the 90's. If you watched the exhibition game against Spain this past sunday, you saw him get the best of Rubio on 3 straight possessions in the 3rd quarter. He'll most likely be a reserve for the Americans, but his smooth shooting will definitly come in handy off the bench.

Eric Gordon- Point Guard/Shooting Guard made the trip to Mardid but he really doesn't have a roll with this team. He's a shoot first point guard with unreal jumping ability, he's a highlight reel player but he doesn't bring anything to the table that the other guards on USA don't.

Derrick Rose- Point Guard: Is a year away from rivaling Rondo as the best point guard in the world. He has NFL speed, he's not very big but he can get to the rim and finish over the best shot blockers in the world. Watching him and Rubio go at each other was like listening to dueling guitars, just an absolute treat. Once he polishes his 3 point shot, he's going to be unstopable.

Russel Westbrook- 3 Guard/Small Forward: He was pretty much just invited to training camp in Las Vegas for his defensive abilities, he survived tryouts and made the trip to Madrid where everyone assumed he would be the odd man out by the time they got to Greece, but all he did was show himself to be the best player on the floor versus lithuania and backed it up with a superb game against Spain. He's long, fast, he can hit the pull up jumper with regularity and he can explode to the rim and finish with style points.

Danny Granger- Forward: He's long and posses all the skill sets of an international forward. He's great on the offensive glass as well as an accurate jump shooter. He's very blue collar(an American expression for hardworker). He didn't get any playing time against Spain on Sunday because Coach K was saving him an our Ultimate Weapon, Rajon Rondo. He's expected to fill a similar roll to that of Carmelo Anthony, however expectations are curved a little bit because, well, Carmelo Anthony might be the best FIBA rules player on the Globe.

I would have gotten into the other players you listed, but since they aren't even on the US roster they are irrelevant for the WC national team discussion.

@ Miggity23: welcome aboard man. Nice breakdown of those players. Hope to you see you posting through WC and on Thup

How would you rate this year's USA NT? Do you think they would get hurt in the paint this year?

Well, those are simple yet loaded questions. How would I rate this USA team compared to past US squads, well, it's not as good as '92, '94, '96 or '08, obviously. However, in comparison to the competition of this tournament, they're the most talented team in the field. That by no means suggests they are unbeatable though. Defensively, especially in the backcourt with guys like Rondo, they're the top team. Offensively, they have the best player in the tournament with Kevin Durant.

Like you mentioned, they lack a dominate scoring threat on the inside. Where this hurts them is the dribble penetration. USA's guards can break down anyone of the dribble, but they don't have that monster inside to catch the dump and finish with regularity. Defensively Tyson Chandler can provide fouls, rebounds, and solid help on the interior. While he is the only 7 footer(technically) on the roster, Durant is 6'11", Odom is 6'11", Rudy Gay is 6'9", Danny Granger is 6'10" so their length can really bother the opposition's offensive sets and they can match up with anyone on glass. If Spain returned both Gasol brothers rather than just Marc, I'd be really worried. But if you watched on Sunday, USA can throw enough long bodies at Gasol and Reyes to disrupt their rhythm(even though both of those players had good games). How many of the teams in this years WC really have unstoppable big men?

Where USA is going to vulnerable is if they have an off shooting night against a solid european zone. If you watched the Lithuania exhibition, you saw the US squad start 3-30 from the field. That's something this team can ill-afford to do. Especially against a team with more talented guard play than the Lithuanians.

Cheers for sharing your views. It will certainly be interesting to USA take on Greece tomorrow. That game might give even more answers about both teams.

Greece would have just one advantage over USA, it's frontline, but Bourousis still not ready and will not play.

Not to mention FIBA will announce tomorrow probably punishments for Sofo and Fotsis...

Yes, that is incredibly disappointing that Rondo withdrew from the team. I was excited to see him in this tournament.
