Euroleague 2010/11 clubs
#41
Hi to everyone, I am new on this forum. I coming from Ljubljana - Slovenia, and for a long time ago my favorite team is Union Olimpija Ljubljana, former Smelt Olimpija. Olimpija plays Euroleague from from the begining of this competition. Before they were playing also the Fiba Euroleague and the last big success is 3rd place in final4 in Rome in 1997, when they lose against Olympiacos in semifinal. They win the game for 3rd place against Asvel with easy. A lot of years Olimpija was playing a big role in the Euroleague. But we know, that the last few years was diferent.

Last few years Olimpija have big financial problems. the directors, presidents, coaches and players was replecing very often and then we also fall in the big crize about the resoults in the euroleague. We know that, if olimpija doesn`t get a good resoult in next year or two, Slovenia will stay out of the Euroleague. Now I am asking you, what is your opinion about Olimpija? Does Olimpija stil have some reputation in europe?

Hi, let's play, well come to the forum!

Olimpija is surely a well known team in Europe. Everyone who following European BB knows that Olimpija has deep traditions and is one of those teams who don't have many big names in their rosters, but they surely have big heart and great local fans basis. More over, Olimpija was one of these teams that produced great prospects to another level like Šaras, Becirovič and others. Personally, I always liked such small clubs like Olimpija, Žalgiris, Partizan and so on. Financial crisis has nothing to do with reputation, Olimpia should be OK as soon as they will solve that problems, IMO.

Thank you for these positive words. I just hope, that the Euroleague have the same opinion about the clubs as Olimpija, Žalgiris, Partizan, Cibona... Few years ago we could put in these group also the Asvel and Pau Orthez. They were always the rough teams for play.

Your club is well-known in Europe for its tradition. They need to get more competitive though. If they can't put together a competitive team then they should not be in Euroleague. I would say the same of my team Panathinaikos.

Panathinaikos, I agree about that. Olimpija is a member of Euroleague just becouse of tradition. every year the fans are wait and hopes that the club made a improvement, but than we are disapoint.

two weeks ago olimpija was almost dead. then we get new director and the sponsors say they will stay with the club, so now we are waiting the new team and hope for the best. We dont have so much money then the best european clubs, so we cant buy exspensive players, but the bigest problem is, that we are not making own players and have a bad scouting for a few years. we do bad job with youngsters. on the other side, we have a great chance to cooperate with other club from ljubljana named Geoplin Slovan, who found and make great players. for example Lakovic, Goran Dragic, Jan Vesely and some other come from Slovan. our new director is in good relationship with them, so now we hope that we could cooperate with them...

Guys, good luck with the draw today! <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

Isn't Olimpija's budget usually around 5 million euros a season?

Any self-respecting European basketball fan knows and most importantly supports Olimpija, and other teams like Olimpija, namely Zalgiris, Partizan and others.

Things are tough now for Olimpija, Slovenia and entire EU. So you have to be patient, as we all do, and hope for something better. the most important thing for now is that Olimpija will be saved and exist next season.

The club had a debt of 5m euros, but has committed a couple of million euros to next eyar budget and there are some money left to repay a small percentage of the debt... if that's the best case scenario, then be it. Better days will come.
Respect and thanks for everything:

Alvertis, Bodiroga, Jasikevicius, Radja, Wilkins, Vrankovic, Fotsis, Rebraca, Kattash, Gentile, Koch, Middleton, Kutluay, Rogers, Papadopoulos, Becirovic, Tomasevic, Siskauskas, Pekovic, Lakovic, Vujanic, Chatzivrettas, Maljkovic, Spanoulis and many more to follow in the near future.

yes, the last few seasons the budget should be around 5 milion euros, but thats not budget for the first team. First team budget was half of that, and the other half should be for operational things, youngsters and so on... then they put together a team for approximately 2,5 milion euros, but they did never get this money from sponsors, so now we have depts...
