Quote: Will Nowitzki put on a Bayern jersey?

We have all heard about the new project of FC Bayern to build a strong and competitive basketball team. The first step in this direction was hiring coach Dirk Bauermann. According to Bauermann himself now, Dirk Nowitzki could be a long-range step.

Bauermann is having no illusions. The main goal of the season is for FC Bayern to get promoted to the first league, and establish the club as a major power there in the seasons to come. He does however believe that it is not impossible to lure Dirk into playing for the club sometime in the future.

"Nowitzki may be Franconian*, but he's also a Bavarian. If we succeed in our primary goals, he may become a long-range step for the club. When a club like FC Bayern decides to establish top-knotch basketball in Munich, this has a great influence over the entire sport. This a historical chance for Germany." said coach Bauermann.

* Nowitzki was born in Wurzburg, Franconia which is a region somehow culturally different yet within the borders of Bavaria.
Respect and thanks for everything:

Bayern Munich signs Aleksandar Nadjfeji

Aleksandar Nadfeji will continue his carrer in the German Pro A league in Bayern Munich, coached by Dirk Bauermann. The veteran 33-year-old arrives from the Walter Tigers, where he played during the last season averaging 12.8 points and 3.3 rebounds per game. Nadjfeji is playing in Germany since 2001.

Another elite player who will play for Bayern Munich in the German Pro A league next season. Bayern has announced the signing of Demond Greene, a member of the German national team who played last season in Greece for Olympia Larissa.

This is really interesting. Not only have Bayern signed Demond Greene, they have also signed Steffen Hamann so they now have two of best German players signed up to play in the second division next season.

Once Bayern make it to the BBL, I'm keen to see their strategy. Historically, Alba Berlin has been the German basketball powerhouse and they've had some nice competition lately from Telekom Baskets Bonn and EWE Baskets Oldenburg. With that said, the German strategy tends to be to stock pile American players.

Alba had a fine run in the Eurocup last season but typically the German teams fail pretty miserably in European competition. In fact Steffen Hamann and fellow national team member Lucca Staiger were both on Alba last season and struggled to find playing time as at the end of the day they are less talented players than their American counterparts (Julius Jenkins, Rashad Wright, Immanuel McElroy, Derrick Byars).

If Bayern plan on building a powerhouse with German talent, it simply will not happen. They will struggle against the likes of Alba and Telekom Baskets. What Bayern an offer its brand name and potentially larger budget to recruit some of the better players in Europe. That will be the key to all of this, Alba has been able to recruit guys who do not come cheap, Hollis Price, Derrick Byars, Julius Jenkins. Bayern is going to need to take it to the next level if they want to become a European powerhouse like they are in football and that will all come down to funding.

They cannot utilize their football strategy of buying up all of the best domestic players from around the bundesliga each season, it won't work in basketball. It will be interesting to see how this all plays out and it will be especially interesting to see the reaction of Alba. If Bayern starts spending excessively, will Alba start to do the same? I cannot imagine they'll stand back and idly watch Bayern take over their league. This could be really good for basketball in Germany. Now they just need to figure out how to grow domestic talent.

Thanks for the info. Will they be playing in the same arena once they qualify to Bundesliga? Looking even further, if they reach Euroleague the minimum arena capacity requirement is 5,000. Will they have such venue?

Who has been leading the way for Bayern? I'm not familiar with the rest of the team outside of Greene and Hamann.

maras and hall are very dominant in the paint...the other guys contribute very well, but these two big guys are the actual forces in the game since greene and hamann went down!

well, they would probably switch to the Olympiahalle, but i am not so sure about that...sorry!

i'll keep you updated...and send you the links to the press conferences and all the other media stuff i can find!
