Good news for Respublika. That paper was totally irrelevant.

NBA scouts will attend Žalgiris - Partizan to see Vesely in first place and M. Kuzminskas at the same time (maybe Pocius in radar as well, but it wasn't mentioned). The problem is that new coach is not trusting Kuzminskas so far (even if he's good when he's in), and choosing Milaknis, the guy who can only shoot open threes and is slow as hell in defence. I still can't understand what is he doing in Žalgiris and I still can't understand how the hell Žalgiris can't find a dialogue with a single youngster from the whole universe...
#26
I didn't realise Kuzminskas was so good. One more reason to watch Zalgiris game then.

Do we know how serious are the injuries of Jankunas and Pocius?

Pocius should be ready for the game against Asseco Prokom and probably Jankunas too as there were no news about his injury. I might have missed something since I wasn't online for the last couple of days.

The curious issue to me is the injury of Marcus Brown. Or to rephrase that sentence - whether he is really injured or is the club covering his extremely poor physical shape. Although this is just a theory but I wouldn't be surprised to know that it is true having seen Brown play in the first LKL games.

Overall image of Zalgiris isn't too good. First of all, I had a feeling that Petrovic is not the right coach for this team once the roster was completed. Petrovic prefers defensive basketball that's what most Serbian coaches do. And that's totally fine. It was proven many times that they (Serbian coaches) can be very successful. The problem I see here is that the players are of different mentality. They are really dangerous in a fast paced game. Since there are so many players on the roster who can substitute each other equally, the coach should force them to play intensely and wear the opponents down. They should play intense basketball in defense and in offense. That's what we saw in Lithuanian NT in Turkey.

Yet what we see is rather slow game. To me most of the shots that are taken appear to be random instead of coming from set plays. The passing is slow in most cases. That often leads to stupid turnovers as the opponents can easily intercept the pass. Some players really don't look themselves because of such offence.

The defense is questionable too. The players of the opposing team find ways to score rather easily. Such defense was the most surprising thing to me since I thought that Petrovic will at least force this team to play hard in defense.

Because of the reasons that I mentioned above, the team, even when it wins, wins harder than it should or than it could. It looks like the players are not using their potential. The first thing I remember is Lithuanian NT under Butautas. No, not the team of 2009. I am talking about the team in 2007 and 2008 when even though it had overall good results, but it played not the way it should have played. Some games could have been easy wins but due to the tactical decisions of the coach those wins were much harder. However, there were some big names in NT who sometimes played the way they wanted and not the way they were told to play by the coach.

The decision to sing Collins was a mistake and I stand by that. The only thing I don't understand why Petrovic is keeping him on the court when is making turnover after turnover in the key moments of the game when there are two point guards on the bench waiting for their chance. Especially since Collins seems not to give a f*** about what he does on the court.

One thing is clear that Petrovic won't change his philosophy. It is also clear that his style doesn't fit the team. At least it doesn't so far. This team has the potential to go far this season and it would be a shame if they fail to reach that potential.

Btw, did you know that Zalgiris won only 3 away games out of 31 away games played in the last 3 years in Euroleague. That's a shameful stat. It's one thing that always makes me mad when I think about Zalgiris. Of course in this case there were objective reasons for at least part of such performance but it became a trend. What we saw last week in Tel Aviv was a continuation of this "tradition" and I really thought they could fight for the win.

I think that Petrovic wasn't the best choice for Zalgiris.

Good post. Petrovic is not doing a good job. Maccabi trashed downed and rolled all over Žalgiris as it was shameful to watch. And that's having half of Lithuanian NT, that showed rock solid defence WC.

On offense, Collins is trusted way too much. While I didn't even expect anything smart speaking about sets, while it does not happen in Žalgiris for years now. Reasonable rotation would be enough for the least, but what I see is washed out Collins and one minded Milaknis.

The game vs Maccabi was judged due to one single decision. Not to double team Sofo.

Yes, that's a huge mistake but what about 26 turnovers made by Zalgiris? It seemed as if the players met each for the first time in their lives and they tried to play a game.
#32
I doubt Petrovič will last for the whole season.
#33
I have one comment. SOFOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Is a beast.

In the best-case scenario the arena will be ready for use in June. Worst case is August.

Petrovic seems to get "better" and "better". BeforeI make any further comments I must say that I didn't expect to see Butautas-type of coaching again. I was wrong apparently. He's so unbelievably stubborn, just like Butautas. It's as if he had a shot gun pointed to his head with a choice 'either change your tactics or you're dead'. He would die for his tactics!

Although in this post I will be talking mainly about last night's game against Maccabi but all of what I'm going to say applies to the whole season.

Petrovic has a 'magical' plan of rotating the players during the game. The problem is that he makes those substitutions no matter what. It's as if he had an alarm set every few minutes so he knows when to replace the players on the court. A clear example of such stupidity was visible yesterday. Zalgiris started the game with an unusual starting lineup. This time there was no Milaknis (OMFG!) and no Collins. And guess what? Zalgiris was up 14-7 midway through the first quarter. But then Petrovic's alarm rang he put Milaknis, Collins and Watson on the court. The result? Maccabi takes the lead and Zalgiris can't score. Soon after that he replaces the whole starting lineup. The struggle continues. Petrovic doesn't give a damn how well or bad the players that are on the court play. When it's time for a substitution there's nothing you can do.

The stupid rotation continued during the whole game but another notable moment was the last minutes of the game. Zalgiris had a small lead. Then Petrovic decided to let score-less game killer Collins. He quickly makes two turnovers and goes back to bench. I have to admit that in this case Petrovic has changed slightly since previously he wouldn't have reacted to Collins mistakes at all. Kalnietis had a bad game as well but he played excellently compared to Collins.

Another thing that reminded me Butautas yesterday was the that Zalgiris attacked. How many times they took a shoot/attempted to shoot when the 24 sec clock was at 1 or 2? Maccabi just take the ball and score points within the first 15 seconds of their attack while Zalgiris tries to kill the time or they have no clue how to break Maccabi's defence? Either way it's the result of a poor preparation or poor tactical decisions. In spite of such slow play they still made 28 turnovers! I mean 28!

And what about Petrovic's love to Milaknis - the worst player on the roster of Zalgiris? The player who is at the level of an average LKL team is EL starter! As straight forward already said, Milaknis has NO SKILLS at all except 3pt shooting and that's only if he's open with no defenders 2m from him. Even his shooting technique is so slow that it's painful to watch. Milaknis is terribly slow in thinking, slow at running and even slow in shooting. He's still starting the games even when there's Delininkaitis and Pocius on the bench!

Zalgiris could have been 6-1 in this group but now they will finish 4th at best with the way they play. Then it's Top 16 and another 0-6, 1-5 or 2-4.

The only question to me is whether Romanov make a move before it's too late. Petrovic came to Zalgiris because Romanov wanted him. Plus the only foreign language that Petrovic speaks is Russian, the native language of Romanov. Who cares that Petrovic can't communicate with his players and needs his assistant to translate everything? I still doubt that Petrovic will stay here till the end of the season but when he leaves it will be too late to change anything this season.
#38
Still he can't come in and pass himself. Players had 28 turnovers...

His only mistake was to sign and now use Collins... Pargo humiliated him and Begic in that dunk, which also cost us the game.
Respect and thanks for everything:

BTW, Žalgiris unfortunately proves that they are not friendly team for youngsters. Šalenga and Milaknis had some horrible games, but the youngster Kuzminskas is not getting any chances in Euroleague while looking fine in LKL.

Kuzminksas:

"When I ask the coach why I'm not playing, he asking me how old I am?"

In a way he is right... he must prove his worth to play in the trainings, not by asking the coach why he is not playing... coaches don't like that, especially Serbians.
Respect and thanks for everything:

Alvertis, Bodiroga, Jasikevicius, Radja, Wilkins, Vrankovic, Fotsis, Rebraca, Kattash, Gentile, Koch, Middleton, Kutluay, Rogers, Papadopoulos, Becirovic, Tomasevic, Siskauskas, Pekovic, Lakovic, Vujanic, Chatzivrettas, Maljkovic, Spanoulis and many more to follow in the near future.
