Great game by France! I have always liked France NT... Last year in Eurobasket they had the best record with just 1 defeat but De Colo was foolish enough to score and send them on Spain in the quarter finals...

I like Lebanon's passion for basketball. All Asian teams proved today they can play some serious ball... Jordan and China that is...

Gotta grab all the games that I missed <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

I'm definitely intrigued by Jordan and want to check 'em out <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

Oh, and about De Colo making the shot and sending France to play with Spain?

Well, the French will be eternally cursing, because win or lose a basketball game vs. US, they always get pwned in the end anyway <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Laugh' />

Game plan for every team playing against New Zealand: "Shut down Kirk Penney."

With that said, Kirk Penney had 37 points today. This guy is terrific. I fully expect him to be one of the main beneficiaries of a nice contract following this tournament.

We had one decent quarter against New Zealand and then we got into slow basketball because of which they managed to come closer. Kemzura's quote that the players did well in stopping Penney sounded crazy. They let him score 37 points! How is that a good defence?

So far to me Gecevičius is the biggest disappointment in the NT. It seems he doesn't fit into quick basketball that we are playing. He's too slow in defence against quick guards and can't rid of his guard often. We can't expect Kleiza to score 27 points every game.

After watching the first quarter of Spain vs. France I was sure that it will be a one sided game but it turned to be completely opposite. Is there some kind of opening game syndrome for Spain? Does losing the last friendly game has some negative effect (last year they lost against Lithuania just before Eurobasket)? Have they lost on purpose because they are confident they would go to the final? Is this French team really that good?

This result gives more chances for other teams in the group only if they manage to take a win against either Spain of France.

The baskets Kleiza couldn't score on Oly's behalf under dumb-ass Yannakis's reign will be made up by the WC now <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rofl3.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Rofl3' />

I agree, but I also think that Maciulis has been an even bigger let down. This is really his team to take control of, it's his tournament to shine and if he doesn't step up his game Lithuania is in trouble.

The great thing about the Lithuanian teams of the past is that they were very well balanced and could beat you in a variety of ways and always had great ball movement. This current team is one dimensional, their success is too dependent on Linas Kleiza, their ball movement is sloppy and their defense is often non-existent.

I think that it was a mistake to cut Lukauskis. He's a no-frills player who is never going to take command of a game but he is an solid defender that can change the flow with his defensive intensity. Right now Lithuania isn't guarding anybody and having a chap like Lukauskis as your 12th man gives you that option to pull him in if needed. Right now it is needed...

Personally I didn't expect much from Mačiulis. He never was a great player at club level. Yes. he can have some decent games from time to time but nothing more.

I wouldn't have included Lukauskis in NT already two years ago. All he can do is hit some shots once in 5 or 10 games. Besides he's getting old and since he's a guard there is no room for him in this team.

Quote:Lithuania squeezes past Canada

Lithuania needed 30 minutes in order to take the lead for the first time in the game and eventually defeat Canada 70-68. North Americans suffered an unexpected loss against Lebanon but they were a different team today.

Canada took control of the game early thanks to a couple of impressive runs. The score was 7-0 and 15-4 in the first quarter. Lithuanians struggled to find the target while Canadians just couldn't stop shooting.

Things didn't improve in the second half for Lithuania. Martynas Gecevicius, Jonas Maciulis, Tomas Delininkaitis and the rest were unable to put the ball in the basket. Meanwhile Canada in addition to scoring difficult shots were also outrebounding their opponents.

The third quarter saw Canadians taking the largest lead of the game 56-39. Jeremy Anderson and Joel Anthony were the main men behind Canada's successful run. Lithuania woke up late in the third quarter and managed to narrow the gap to just two points.

Tomas Delininkaitis nailed a three-pointer to give his team a one-point lead for the first in the game as the fourth quarter started. Both teams exchanged baskets several times and the score remained very close. Lithuanians were up by four points with less than two minutes left to play. Jeremy Anderson had the chance to win the game for Canada with a three-pointer but the ball bounced of the rim.

Canada will take on France on Tuesday while Lithuania will face Spain.

Score by quarters: 12-20, 21-23, 22-14, 15-11

Lithuania:
Linas Kleiza 18, Martynas Pocius 11, Tomas Delininkaitis 11, Jonas Maciulis 8, Mantas Kalnietis 7, Tadas Klimavicius 7, Paulius Jankunas 4, Renaldas Seibutis 2, Simas Jasaitis 2.

Canada: Jeremy Anderson 15, Joel Anthony 12, Denham Brown 11, Levon Kendall 9, Andy Rautins 7, Jermaine Bucknor 5, Jevohn Shepherd 5, Aaron Doornekamp 3, Ryan Bell 1.

The only positive thing about this game is that the team showed that they are not going to give up even when they play terribly.

Quote:Lithuania beat world champions

The young Lithuanian squad kept their winning record perfect after downing defending champions 76-73. It was the second for Spain in three games so far and the first loss against Lithuania in an official game since Eurobasket 2003 final.

The game started with both teams exchanging several missed shots until Rudy Fernandez opened the scoring for Spain. Only a minute later Simas Jasaitis scored to tie the game at 2. Reigning world champions were more accurate in the first quarter. Lithuania was down 11-22 after the first 10 minutes of play and looked like Spain is starting to pull away.

Marc Gasol and Juan Carlos Navarro were the top scorers in the second quarter for Spain but that wasn't enough to extend their lead. Lithuania managed to reduce their deficit to 8 points before leaving the court for the half time.

The third quarter again showed some signs that it could be the turning point of the game as Spaniards built a comfortable 18-point lead with just 4:13 left to play in the third period. Jonas Maciulis scored 5 points for Lithuania and Martynas Pocius beat the buzzer to finish the quarter. Spain ahead by 9 points.

Lithuanian defence locked Spain's players in the final period. None of them managed to score for almost 4-and-a-half minutes. Meanwhile Jonas Maciulis made two steals against Rudy Fernandez and finished them with two slam dunks. The signal was sent - this game isn't over yet. Spain was up by only a single point when Marc Gasol scored two free-throws to open scoring for his team.

From that moment the real thriller started. Martynas Pocius hit a three-pointer to tie the game at 66-66. Marc Gasol and Juan Carlos Navarro score three unanswered points to bring back a 3-point lead for Spain. Then Mantas Kalnietis scored from down town to tie the game again. However, this time Spain had no answer. Linas Kleiza score from the inside the paint to give Lithuania the lead for the first time in the game with 39 seconds left to play.

Marc Gasol was sent to the free-throw line but missed both of his shots. Pocius converted one free-throw for Lithuania and Navarro responded with two free-throws. Linas Kleiza stepped confidently to the free-throw line and made both shots with 6 seconds to play to seal the win for the Baltic Giants.

Lithuania will aim to finish first in Group D and will face France and Lebanon while Spain will try to redeem themselves against Lebanon and Canada.

Score by quarters: 22-11; 21-24; 21-18; 9-23.

Spain: Marc Gasol 18, Juan Carlos Navarro 18, Rudy Fernandez 13, Jorge Garbajosa 11, Alex Mumbru 4, Ricky Rubio 3, Sergio Llull 3.

Lithuania: Linas Kleiza 17, Jonas Maciulis 13, Martynas Pocius 13, Mantas Kalnietis 12, Simas Jasaitis 5, Robertas Javtokas 4, Tomas Delininkaitis 4, Paulius Jankunas 3, Martynas Andriuskevicius 3, Martynas Gecevicius 2.

Huge win for Lithuania! 23-9 in the fourth quarter against one of the best teams in the world is a fantastic accomplishment. I personally thought that Lithuania was going to find itself in a talent gap for a few years until the next wave of youngsters develop, this win is massive.

Vilius, today Maciulis gave us exactly what I expect out of him. Hopefully he can keep it up! If he can play this well against Spain there's no reason he can't do the same in against teams like Canada! The August 31 Jonas Maciulis is necessary for Lithuania's success going forward well beyond this tournament. <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/thup.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
