EuroBasket 2011 to be played with 24 teams

Quote:FIBA Europe announces that the FIBA Europe Executive Committee approved the proposal made by the Lithuanian Basketball Federation to play the EuroBasket 2011 Final Round with 24, instead of 16 teams.

The Executive Committee was backed in its decision by a majority of the FIBA Europe Board Members, who were also present at the meeting in Istanbul.

"The expansion is meant to follow the rapid development of European Basketball." Commented FIBA Europe Secretary General Nar Zanolin.

"Proof for this development can be found at the FIBA World Championship where 9 of the 10 participating European Teams advanced from the Preliminary Round to participate in the Eight-Finals."

FIBA Europe President Olafur Rafnsson added: "After it was clear that EuroBasket 2013 will be played with 24 teams we are now even more pleased that the expansion could be carried out two years earlier.

"European Basketball is stronger than ever and now the time has come to stay abreast of changes and, together with our Lithuanian friends, organise the biggest and best ever EuroBasket."

I voted yes because I think it's good to let 24 teams participate and it can be great for european basketball and it can help smaller teams build tradition and improve.

BUT making it in this EB is simply a joke, especially after teams worked so hard in the qualis..

Exactly. The teams were giving their 100% in order to qualify and now those teams that finished lower still qualified. It is unfair. The reason behind expanding Eurobasket to 24 teams already in 2011 was very simple - Lithuania's closest neighbours failed to qualify and that meant a loss of potentially large fan groups arriving. That means less tickets sold and less income to the host country.

By the way, Lithuanian Basketball Federation will cover all the costs of accommodation for only 15 teams that qualified first. Other teams will have to pay for themselves.

23 teams are already known:

Lithuania, Spain, Serbia, Greece, Slovenia, France, Croatia, Germany, Russia, Turkey, Great Britain, Belgium, Montenegro, FYR of Macedonia, Israel.

These teams were given spots due to expansion of the tournament: Italy, Latvia, Ukraine, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Bulgaria, Poland.

Finland, Portugal and Hungary will play in AQT for the last spot.

The system of the tournament will be four groups with 6 teams in each. Top three teams from each group will qualify for the second round which will be the same as in previous years.

It's likely that we'll have three clear favourites and three underdogs in each group.

It's good to expand to 24 teams. But it's bad for players that must have play about 8 games if pass to next round. Not mentioning if go all the way to finals. And for sure it will be better if Eurobasket played every 4 years. Then will watch teams come with best players.

It's much better to just go to 24 teams. IMHO the EuroBasket is now the strongest FIBA tournament there is. With the world championship second and the Olympics third. Of course American NBA fans will argue till the end of the world, but they are ignorant and don't know anything about basketball.

EuroBasket should be the main and most important tournament now.

On the other hand 24 teams in Eurobasket mean that almost every team that 'knows how to play basketball' (if you don't mind me using such expression) will qualify. Expansion will show its first impact on European basketball in probably 10 years or so in my opinion. Maybe a bit sooner since the development of the sport is quick.

From what I heard Israeli basketball association might sue fiba for that move, for all the qualifying round expenses since it now became almost useless. I don't think it'll happen but I do understand the anger, players gave up for their summer, didn't rest, fought hard in hard conditions with game every few days after a long season and all that for nothing. They probably won't sue and I don't think they can win this case anyway, cuz the costs would be the same if they said first 4 places in every group qualify before the competition began, but again , the anger is understandable, too bad that not all the fiba Europe member nations do something with this joke. No wonder basketball isn't close to football, when such idiots have so much power.

Israel is asking 1 million euros from FIBA Europe...

They should ask double as that, for psychological and physical stress occurred during the group games...

It's perfectly obvious that ever since Greece beat Team USA in 2006 that the NBA is running FIBA. Anyone that is not in denial knows that. The scary thing is that every year ULEB does something to make itself more like the NBA...............
