Jerry Sloan resigns from Utah Jazz after 23 years
#1
Quote:In an unexpected turn of events, Jerry Sloan have resigned from Utah Jazz, after spending twenty three successful seasons with the franchise.

Sloan, who had joined the club in 1988 - and signed a one year contract extension just three days ago - resigned after the team's star Deron Williams accused him of the team's poor performance and record recently.

The final straw of the fallout between Sloan and Williams was the unilateral decision of the player to call different plays for the team than the ones Sloan had just instructed the team to run during a time out.

In a press conference which ended just minutes ago, Utah Jazz administration announced the end of Sloan from the team while the coach himself, crying, confirmed it. Tyrone Corbin was named new head coach.

Enjoy Jerry Sloan during happier moments of his NBA career

A player not doing what his coach tells him? Never heard of that before. Put him on ice on the bench as punishment. I guess Sloan's had it putting up with cocky players who think they know it all. <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Rolleyes' />

This Deron Williams asshole had decided on his own, back in 2006, not to pass to Kirilenko because as he said "he wasn't training hard enough".

It is the end of an age. 23 years wow! I think Jazz needs a change but forcing the legendary name of this club to resign seems very ugly behavior.

I don't believe he was "forced" out I believe he had enough. If I was Sloan I'd quit too. Though I'm suprised he did so in the middle of the season. They will miss him. Deron Williams is an ass. I never liked Sloan BUT I always respected his mind and admired his tenacity. He was a great coach.

He signed a one year extension just 3 days before his resignation... and he decided he had enough. He was clearly forced.

Maybe you are right. Only time will reveal what happened. It's true there was definitly an element of the organization that didn't want him there. He has been struggling with criticism for years. I believe he was simply fed up and exhausted with struggling with this element. Yes he signed an extension BUT if they wanted him gone why did they offer him the extension?? I dont know the details of the contract but i think he decided to sign the extension and said "f*ck YOU UTAH!" and took the money in some retirement clause. I can't wait to see what happened behind the scenes. I could totally see Jerry Sloan saying "f*ck YOU PAY ME!".

Yup This pretty much confirms it!! Karl Malone is so pissed. I love this guy though. One of the all time greats. Also long time coach staff member Phil Johnson quit/retired.

I totally agree with Karl Malone! Coach Sloan was one of the greatest coaches there was. It's very sad to see him walk away from the game. Deron Williams is a very good player but what he did was wrong. He can learn a lot from Stockton and Malone. I hope that Malone will return to the Jazz in an coaching position or just in the organisation. the same goes for Stockton
