Euroleague QF2: Caja Laboral - Maccabi TA
#21
What an absolute crushing of Caja from Maccabi today. Caja was shooting bricks non-stop, and got punished by Pargo once more. Who would have guessed Sofo would have had the team's most assists? Next they'll be calling him the Black Sabonis <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rofl3.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Rofl3' />

With such a win, Maccabi has even better psychology on their side, Caja will only be able to stay in the game if they can shoot the rock, otherwise it's end of the EL season for 'em.

Unfortunatly Perkins has finished the season officialy, after an MRI check it has been confirmed. <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Sad' /> <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Sad' /> <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Sad' />

That's really sad, first of all for Perkins himself but also for the team. I hope Maccabi will not be very affected by his absence!!

I hope Panathinaikos and Maccabi TA will meet each other in the final! <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Biggrin' />

That's definitely bad news. Could even affect the entire team's psychology for tomorrow... good luck to Maccabi.

Yea the psychological effect might be even bigger than the real effect of missing Perkins (which is big by itself) by my bigger worry is what's gonna happen in the FF, cuz with Perkins available and after the team beating Caja by 21 I'd be pretty optimistic about our chance to go all the way but without him I think that even if we make it to the FF we won't go any further (and of course that reaching the FF is a big achievment by itself) and this great season might not reach its full potential.

They say 9 months, but I'm sure Perkins will return earlier than that, best wishes.

The best word I can find to describe Perkins is fighter so I hope and believe you're right.. No player deserves such thing but Perkins is among the ones the deserve it the less if there is such thing, I just hope he'll be back to himself after that, think what a huge shock-he's having the best season of his career with huge contracts waiting and suddenly suffers a severe knee injury, horrible timing.. But one of Maccabi's owners said they're going to support Perkins and extand his contract as long as he wishes to.

According to this Greek article... Maccabi will lose the next two games on purpose... (or Final Four semi-final) so they don't have to play on May 8th in the Final Four due to some national holiday <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Blink' /> citing Yaron Arbel article...

I thought Yaron was a serious reporter... but this proposition is just shocking...

Coming from Greece, it's probably bullshit... but I'd like to hear Maccabi fans take position on this...

Maccabi will not lose on purpose.. They know that the final is on the memorial day for a very long time now and they anounced they will not appear to the final (in case they reach it) if it will be on the memorial day (the day starts at 8pm on the one day and ends on 8pm in the other as the hollidays and memorials are still using the ancient Jewish day that starts from sunset to sunset or something like that.

Maccabi told many times Jordi that and tried to find a solution but never did they even suggest losing on purpose.. As a Maccabi fan for a very long time this team puts winning almost above all.. So they will fight to reach there and try to find a solution to the problem as the memorial day is a very big of an issue over here but in case there will be no solution (making it earlier or moving it one day forward) they will not play. What I'm saying is from what Maccabi owners said repeatedly in the media over here.

EDIT:I just read the article, remembered I got chrome and used it to translate. They do explain pretty well the issue, about Arbel he's the guy from the EL site (I'm pretty sure) I like reading his columns there.. But we got subscription to "Yediot" newspaper and I'm usually reading it and never did I notice any colums saying anything like that, I rarely miss a colums/article about Maccabi.. It could be that I missed it but I didn't notice anything like that. And I don't think there's a chance, even the slightest that Maccabi will lose on purpose, I mean even Blatt that never complains about the refs said after the game against Barca "maybe someone doesn't want us in the final four" after a horrible refereeing night (led by Luigi).

Anyway, if Yaron wrote it it's very nonprofessional, if I know anything about this team then they won't do anything like that. What's even worse is Jordi- when you decide your date the least you can do is check things like that, I don't know of there's an equivalent sort of thing in Greece to explain but as an Israeli I can tell this day is very, VERY important over here and a very sensitive issue.

I hate politics in sports... sports should be just sports, nothing else.

Besides, how many Maccabi players are Jewish anyway? Also if the game starts at 6pm and there is an overtime at 19:58 Maccabi won't play the last 3 minutes?

The issue is not the players, the issue is the fans. I get the anger but if it was only politics it was ok. Maccabi is a club that is built on its fans and not only to play stronger on home court but to build its budget-season tickets-obviously and sponsorships and tv rights which pay alot because they're aware of the huge crowd behind the club, also the management is and Jordi should've known that, Mizrahi talked to him about that several times and LONG time before now.

PS-this isn't just a jewish day as there are also Druze(which have a big part) Christian and even Muslim (although not many) soldiers that have fallen, it's a day when the whole nation stops-nothing on TV but stories of the fallen, ceremonies etc. There's 1 minute on the first day @8pm and 2 minutes on the 2nd day in the morning when there's this siren and everybody stops and stands to honor the fallen- getting out of cars, in the middle of work, anything. This day is much more then politics for the Israeli people and involves way too many emotions. Jordi probably didn't want to change it earlier assuming Maccabi won't reach the FF but he's the one to blame becuase this is a day Maccabi CANT play in.

I would rather the game started 2 hours earlier than one team not going to play at all, making a joke out of the competition... but don't forget that EL and Bertomeu also live on the TV money, and its TV channels that dictate the hour...

And best hours in Europe to sell is late...

Obviously I'm not a huge fan of the idea that one team will not show up and don't forget the whole situation is entirely hypothetical but it could be prevented in many ways long time before now and very easily. Maccabi isn't doing it because they think it's fun to watch Jordi's reaction to that or anything like that.. Don't forget that in this case it means Maccabi gives up a title match and a chance to become European champions, not an easy thing to give up for and that could explain how important this day is over here.. I hope and believe there will be a solution found, also now with Perkins' injury the chance that Maccabi will reach the final isn't too big so I think eventually there'll be no problem, but if there is then I hope it will be solved and we'll avoid such thing as one team not showing up.

Both teams shoot like crazy in TA especially Caja with 71% from the field.. 52-51 for Caja at halftime after Teletovic crazy 10m fade away buzzer beater.

Thanks Zeus.

What a second half! With no Perkins, Chuck Eidson officialy became Choke Eidson and Sofo wasn't effective but still Maccabi crushed Caja 99-77. Simply no words, this team already did more than expected.

All the credit goes to David Blatt!
