Diamantidis is a terrific defensive player but I believe he didn't deserve this year's title and his name as a great defender was a bigger factor than his real performence this season.

Perkins deserved it and I'm not just saying it as a Maccabi fan. I've watched all Maccabi games (obviously) and 3-4 Pao games and Diamantidis didn't look like someone who deserves DPOY award at all while Perkins was all over the place in each and every game. Even the simply defensive stats show that (although in this award stats aren't the most important thing)

D-rebounds- DD-2.9 Perkins-4.3 (DD is 1.96M Perkins is 1.89M) Blocks- DD-0.2 Perkins-0.5 (and again DD is 1.96 while Perkins is 1.89) Steals DD-1.6 Perkins-1.7.

But in this title stats aren't most important as I said but from watching games I believe there's no doubt Perkins was the better defensive player, DD has his name as a great defensive player and that's what won the title IMO.

Well, height can't really come into the equation, they're both guards and that's it. If I'm not mistaken, this award takes the choices heavily into account of all EL coaches this season. DDiamond is PAO's go-to man, end of story, despite any stats. When the game is at its most important and critical, the ball is always in that man's hands. His performance and clear mind (especially in the last moments of every quarter-final game) is what knocked out Barcelona from the throne this year, Barce-PAO was this year's EL biggest match up, and all the eyes of Europe were on there. Maybe if Maccabi was playing against Barcelona in the QFs, things may have been in a better light for Perkins, but in the awards category for best defensive player of the year, DDiamond was first by a good size margin in front of Perkins, it wasn't exactly neck-to-neck.

You're saying he's Pao's go to guy and the ball's in his hands in the crucial moments and he's doing it great I defiantly agree but what does it have to do with the DPOY award? For me DD is the obvious MVP and what you said is part of the reasons, he's one of the most complete players in the league but IMO he wasn't the best defensive player this season and didn't deserve this award (I'm not saying he wasn't a good defender this season, simply not the best.)

He played great defense in the QFs, and I think this is what swayed things in his favour together with everything else he did on the court (whether that is objective or not is another matter however), although most honorable mention goes to Kalathis for literally putting handcuffs on Navarro and chasing la bomba each game non-stop!

I can't say I've really seen what Perkins has done in his defensive game, but I believe these awards are also a lot about politics, etc. Anyway, it will be a most interesting F4 big final PAO vs. Maccabi, to see how these players match against each other <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Wink' />

But unfortunatly we won't be able to see Perkins-DD matchup this season because Perkins finished his season and won't come back for about 9 months

Yeah, I forgot about that one. Hope he gets better soon enough.

^ Nice addition, it ties into what I was talking about earlier that it wasn't just his stats, but overall court defensive duties that he covered in nearly every scenario possible. I'm glad to say that Mitso is also from my region of Kastoria! I hope to meet him live one day <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

You probably mean

"his impact is much greater than numbers. On-the-ball pressure, an unique ability to guard multiple positions and the leadership of his team's entire defense all make Diamantidis"

If you change the word Diamantidis to Perkins, anybody who watched one Maccabi game this season would still agree. And as I already said, stats have a small part of an award like that and maybe because of that the DPOY is not an objective award cuz you can't just compare numbers. If you watched Maccabi's games you could as well say his impact is much greater than numbers (example-last second offensive rebound and pass while in the air to Blu for the winning shot against Khimki) on-the-ball pressure (was Maccabi's trademark this season) unique ability to guard multiple positions-he was guarding 1-3 positions this season, some of his block (0.5 per game) came on centers. Leadership of his team defense-Except for Perkins himself and Eidson no player in Maccabi was known as a great defender, not even as a good one. Guys like Eliyahu, Pargo, Sofo etc etc were a mess in defense last seasons but with Perkins in charge as Eliyahu (I'm pretty sure it was him or Pargo) said:"With someone like Perkins with you on defense you just feel bad with yourself if you don't give more than 100%"

Anyway, this isn't an objective award as it doesn't rely on numbers but impression of the player's defense and I think this season DD's reputation stood in his side more than his pure defensive performance. I didn't watch all Pao's games this season so I can't tell for sure but that was my impression, especially when compared to Perkins. Anyway it's a bit too big of a deal I made here for such none-important award as DPOY in the Euroleague..

Nice! Kastoria city hall should put up a statue in Mitso's name, he has brought so much fame to Greece and Kastoria, definitely the most famous athlete from our place! <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rofl3.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Rofl3' />
