Giannis Antetokounmpo aka The Greek Freak
#1
The Milwaukee Bucks drafted Giannis Antetokounmpo from Filathlitikos with the 15th pick in the NBA draft. I know absolutely nothing about this kid other than he is exceptionally young for an NBA draft pick and his rights are now owned by Zaragoza so he'll be with them next season. Has anybody seen him play?

I have. He's not read AT ALL for the NBA right now, or even for the Euroleague. Not even close. He has though all the tools to be a really good player in the NBA and that's why the Bucks chose him with their lottery pick.

Defense, rebounding and handles wise, he's already really good. He needs to bulk up a lot though, become a better passer (good thing that he's really altruistic) and of course scorer where he really has ways to go.

Cheers, mate. I've seen some Bucks fans calling for him to join the team next season. That seems crazy to me. No matter how bad the Bucks are expected to be you don't bring an unproven kid over to sit on the bench when he could play, develop and gain confidence in Europe.

It's only a pre-season game but Giannis looked damn good in his debut for the Bucks last night.

Well, I could not have been any more wrong in post #3.

Bringing Giannis over this season has been brilliant. The Bucks are horrendous but they may get a nice piece to put next to Giannis next season (Jabari, Wiggins, Embiid, or Exum). Antetokounmpo is a beast and the best part is that he seems to have a good head on his shoulders. He will be a very nice piece for the Greek national team for the next decade or so.

He's had a great season as a rookie, and that's why he was invited to the All Star Game as a rookie. The spelling of his surname is stupidly spelled in English however. It should be 'Adetokunbo' in English, the way his surname is written now is just a transliteration from Greek to English. Dafuq Huh

Zeus, are you still floating around these parts? Good to know about the pronunciation. He wasn't in the All Star game though, he was in the Rookie-Sophomore game. Hopefully he'll make an All Star game soon!

Yeah that's what I meant Skang, not the senior all-star game, lulz. He's already grown!!!!! When he left Greece to go to the US he was 2.08 m and now he's 2.11 m!!!!!! His athleticism is great, he's not a strong big guy however, his mould is like Tayshaun Prince or Kevin Durant. I haven't watched him play much, as he also left from Greece playing in the second division. So far from the Hellas friendlies he will definitely be useful. If he's not having a great offensive day, he'll still make up for it by grabbing lots of boards, blocking and stealing the ball. He does hustle no end, which is great and is the correct mindset for him to progress. Additionally he is also a poster boy against racism, he is the son of Nigerian illegal immigrants in Greece (now of course they are royalty, having met the prime minister and all!), and he is a young Greek man. This concept is hard to stomach for rising extreme right douchebags in the country, but the presence of Yiannis especially on the Greek NT makes narrow minded people be more accepting. Yes we had Sofo before, and a lesser known other guy, Nestoras Kommatos, who were also black, however they had a Greek parent as well, so their case is slightly different to Yiannis.

As far as Yiannis is doing in the NBA, I do watch highlights of him, and he looks like he's going from strength to strength, but he also needs to start winning some basketball games too Laugh

Quote:Giannis Antetokounmpo can become the best player on earth

Milwaukee Bucks coach Jason Kidd believes that if his Greek superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo works hard enough, he can be the best player on earth.

The 21-year-old was recently voted as the best international player in the NBA by the league’s general managers and has recently signed a four-year, $100 million contract extension the richest contract in Bucks’ history.

And Kidd predicts even more for Antetokounmpo.

“That’s a great honour because the names just mentioned are all very talented and all could be that player,” Kidd said to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

“That’s a great compliment to him and what he’s done, working on his game and getting better. Now it’s not just to stop there as the best international player, but hopefully one day to be one of the best players in the world.

“Nothing surprises me in this league. It just shows how hard he’s working and the way he’s perceived in this league, how GMs think about him.”

Kidd’s comments were echoed by the lanky Greek, who knows what he has to do.

“Do I get a trophy or something?,” he said.

“I feel like I’ve got to work more. Being above Dirk and Marc Gasol and Pau Gasol, they’re really good players. So I’ve got to show on the court – the GMs that voted me – that I deserve it. I’m really happy.”
