Speaking of Lietuva vs USA. I was watching the last quarter of USA vs Lietuva in the 2000 Olympics just yesterday. I bet sarunas jasikevicius wishes he had that shot again. He sure did light the USA up in 2004 in Athens. He was playing with a vengeance it seemed. Did you go for Lietuva back then too Skangles? Watching the 2000 game still gives me chills. Great game

Does anyone know who the Lith player with the lumber jack beard is in the opening montage? The guys beard is epic! Here is the full game here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hUcCRqA6us4

[/quote]

That game is historical! That USA team wasn't bad at all and Liths basically had the victory almost in the pocket when Šiška stood at the FT line. If he had nailed all 3 shots that would be the end of the game... However, that game changed international BB. Now European powerhouses are playing against USA, not only saving their best players for other games <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Tongue' />

That guy is Raimundas Čivilis, former Žalgiris player. I also like his beard.

Coach K won his 902nd game of his career to tie Bobby Knight as the winningest coach in NCAA history. He'll attempt to break the record on Tuesday when Duke takes on Michigan St. The national team is in good hands.

Miami HEAT guard Dwyane Wade has committed to play for Team USA in next year's London Olympics.

From the article, Wade said that this will be his last Olympic stint with Team USA. Wade has been a part of three olympic rosters, from 2004 to 2012. CONFIRMED!!! <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cool.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Cool' />

So what would be the final roster in your account?

C – Howard, Bosh, Odom.

PF – Anthony, Griffin, Love.

SF – Durant, James.

SG – Bryant, Wade.'

PG – Williams, Paul.

2,3,4 positions are perfect. Questions on PG and Centers.

Point guards. Paul was good as a back-up for USA as I remember. But so was Rose for USA 2010 for example and he was more explosive and MVP last season. OK, maybe Williams as tough PG make sense here, but so is Rose or Rondo. Just saying I'm not a fan of him. I would probably go with Rose or Rondo and would take a PG with perfect shooting mechanics Stephen Curry.

Centers. Is it me or USA has only one really explosive pure center these days? And maybe Tyson Chandler as other pure center's option? Howard is great and he'll do the job, however he's not very versatile. Bosh and Odom are not centers in my account. Don't get me wrong, it's still crazy positions over all, but not perfect as other 4.

Straight, I'm not sure yet. It is very hard to determine the 1 spot. If we use players who have committed to 2012 then the roster is stacked. All the players you listed have committed or showed high interest. Also A'mare Stoudemire, Rudy Gay, Andre Igudola etc. USA basketball has reported about 40 players have made commitments. Another 15 show high interest. I'm guessing the final roster will be like this:

C – Howard, Chandler/McGee/Aldridge.

PF – Stoudemire, Griffin, Love, Bosh.

SF – Durant, James, Anthony.

SG – Bryant, Wade.'

PG – Williams, Paul, Rose/Westbrook.

*The bolded players are locked

*Underlined means either or. Only one of these players are going.

PG:

When thinking of Team USA we have been known to take 3 PG. OLY 2008 Kidd, Paul, Deron Williams WC 2010 Rose, Westbrook, Curry, Billiups. Westbrook had the best showing of PG in WC 2010. If I was guessing it would be Williams, Paul Rose, Westbrook. It all depends if they are taking 3 or 4 PG.

Center:

Howard is a lock. After him is chandler. We do have two more explosive Centers in Javele McGee and LaMarcus Aldridge. Javele McGee may be the next big Center in USA.

If it was up to me my roster would look something like this. If you notice I would leave Kobe off the roster. Howard and Chandler are solid centers. Mcgee is an amazing rebounder and defender. Aldridge can score at will around the basket. Griffin and love are amazing rebounders. Love can hit the 3pt. Bosh or A'mare would work well in FIBA play. They can both shoot the outside jump shoot very well. Overall I don't see a big weakness in this team. PG are all solid Rose and Westbrooks have the exact same stats and efficiency. Durant, James, Wade can all score in droves and play elite defense. Paul and Deron Williams are smart crafty players. It's hard to pick 12 players.

C – Howard, Chandler, McGee/Aldridge.

PF – Stoudemire/Bosh, Griffin, Love.

SF – Durant, James.

SG – Gay, Wade.'

PG – Williams, Paul, Rose, Westbrook.

*Slash / means one or the other. I couldn't decide.

Raze, I think that we are somewhat on the same page in terms of not taking 100% of the best individual players but trying to assemble the best overall team but have different approaches as to what that team would look like.

In my opinion the US is dangerously close to returning to its past behaviors that were so devestating in the last decade whereby it takes an all star team of the best players available simply because they're the best players available. I blame this attitude on the success of the redeem team. After the 2010 WC there was all kinds of discussion over whether the 2012 team would be the same team that just won the World Championship or whether the superstars of the redeem team would return. Coach K and Colangelo have made it pretty clear that for the most part it will be the latter.

Team USA needs an identity and this "let's repeat the Dream Team with All Stars" bull shit needs to stop. After the 2006 exit, all the discussion was about "Where was Michael Redd? Where was Taysuan Price?" Remember those days? Greece exposed the US' weakness and all the focus was on finding very talented role players to fill the void. Guess, what, both of those guys made the 2008 Olympic roster but because their skill set wasn't required in any individual game, the US dove straight back to complacency. We're just asking to get upset in 2012.

I seriously doubt that this Team USA will revert back to the struggles of the 2004 team but 2006 is a VERY realistic scenario. I don't think that Spain will beat the US, Team USA respects them too much and will come out prepared. Additionally, I don't think that a team like France can beat the US (France plays an athletic style of play with many players in the NBA, basically they are a poor man's version of the US). I do, however, believe that the US is extremely exposed against second tier teams like Russia, Lithuania, Greece and Brazil.

Last decade Team USA assembled All Star teams, now Team USA assembles All Star teams. The main difference is that back in the day players were declining Team USA invites, now they are lining up for the chance to play. Additionally, Team USA now has some continuity in both player pool and coach but I am not at all convinced that the current player pool has a true sense that they can easily be beaten. Moreover, I think that the role of Jason Kidd was ridiculously underrated in 2008. He was the pass first leader that kept that group together. Who will play that Jason Kidd role on the proposed 2012 roster?

On that note here is my 12 men for London. Note: Coach K and Colangelo will not agree with my proposal.

Team Identity:
Kevin Durant's Gritty, Scrappy, Bruisers.

C: Howard*, Aldridge, B. Lopez

PF: Love, Griffin

SF: Durant, James*

SG: Bryant*, E. Gordon

PG: D. Williams*, Wall, Westbrook

* Denotes pretentious egomaniac who is a risk to the team if they are not kept in check

First, nobody has been able to stop Durant at the international level. He was a beast in 2010. Why be your own worst enemy by limiting Durant's touches with players who think they are on his level but quite frankly are not? Since it is a tournament, the team needs depth but not as much depth is required as in the World Championship and I think the group above is a sufficient mix to get through London.

I really liked the 2010 team, but they were vulnerable. If anybody would have managed to shut down Durant, the US was exposed. Bringing in Kobe and to a lesser extent LeBron eases that pressure just enough for comfort.

I have limited my roster to 4 egomaniacs. Dwight and Kobe are full of themselves but they back it up with their play. I couldn't ask more out of either player, especially on defense so I'm happy to put up with their crap. LeBron is LeBron but he is the most versatile player in the world and for the reason, I take him. Deron is also full of himself but he is a physical PG that creates matchup problems and I like the fact that he was quick to come over to Europe and I think that his time in Turkey is valuable on the international stage.

I like my starting five, I think that they epitomize scrappy, hard nosed play and still allow Durant to be Durant.

If any team has success banging with those guys then I put the young explosive backups of Wall, Gordon and Griffin on the court and let them run and gun. The main reason for taking these guys along with Brook Lopez is that I see them as future players for the national team so it gives them exposure, fills a critical role player positions for us and I can't see any of these guys kicking and screaming over playing time.

Aldridge is another big man who can help spread the floor and Westbrook, like LeBron, is on the team for his versatility.

On a different topic, congrats to Coach K for victory number 903!!! He deserves this record.

Here's what I think Coach K's roster will look like (without injuries).

C: Howard, Bosh, Love

PF: James, Griffin

SF: Durant, Anthony

SG: Bryant, Wade

PG: Paul, Williams, Rose

I can absolutely see them trying to convince us that Bosh and Love are centers in international play. Since that is, of course, nonsense a guy like A'mare has a serious shot at making the roster. I think all things even he's number 13 on their radar but he may knock out either Love or Griffin on the final roster.

Next in line if injuries occur: Stoudemire, Odom, Gay and Westbrook.

I'd love to see Griffin in international play, such an exciting player.

But seriously... isn't Kobe, Wade, James, Anthony, Durant a bit too excessive? I mean give at least 1% chance to the other teams too.

If USA play in the Olympics without its SUPERSTARS(Kobe, LeBron, Wade, Anthony, Amare, Howard etc), I think they'll have a hard time competing a full Spanish team... and trust me, I don't want to see Spain win the gold medal in the Olympics. <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/thudown.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/thudown.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/thudown.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

The problem is that almost all USA players can be considered as super stars <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' /> At least in NBA. USA will have a heck of a team no matter what players will come and seems like they won't have any problems by inviting best players of NBA.

However, not too much chances, but firstly SPAIN in a very good day can beat the best team of USA. They nearly proved it in last OLympics.

Spain is even good enough to beat a team compiled of the best NBA players. Spain's weakness is that the US knows their players well (Gasol, Gasol, Ibaka, Navarro, Calderon, Fernandez). It is much easier to scout a weapon that you know and respect.

I would say that Lithuania and Greece are two of the best teams to beat the US because they are both comprised of really good players with limited NBA exposure. However, after 2006 I'm not sure that the US will ever underestimate Greece again (at least not yet) and after the way that Lithuania played in the US over the past decade they are also not strangers. The positive for both Greece and Lithuania is that they have pretty much turned over their entire roster from the teams that the US is used to. I mean come on do you think LeBron and Carmelo are going to look at Lithuania a team with Kleiza and shiver with fear? No way, these guys are going to look it and say "hmm Kleiza, a below average NBA player" and that fact bodes very well for a team like Lietuva to pull off the upset.

I ultimately think that Russia is truly best positioned to beat the US. Yes, the US knows Kirelenko well and Mozgov a bit but I think the same thought that the US superstars will have about Kleiza they'll have about Kirelenko "hmm Kirelenko a slightly above average NBA player." Russia is a deep team and they are bloody dangerous.

Spain missed their golden chance in 2008. Now with Calderon and Gasol on their decline, it's pretty much impossible.

You're right that Greece's roster has changed almost entirely since 2006 but that also means we don't have a young Papaloukas, we don't have Diamantidis, we don't have Papadopoulos, Tsartsaris and mybe not Sofo and generally I think we have a less good roster than then. <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bag.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Bag' />

I think USA at the moment see only Spain as a real threat. The problem is that being unknown is not enough, but I agree it increases some chances. On other hand, can Greece and Lithuania be overlooked after 2000, 2004 and 2006? They know these crazy teams without names can play <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

Russia? Maybe. They are on a good wave at the moment, however they are inconsistent. I mean they can't keep it up as Lithuania did in 2000 - 2004 period, Greece in 2005 -2006 and specially Spain in 2006 - 2011. I mean they are lacking something to be a true powerhouse that you could safely lock them for favourites. But they do have Mazgov, Kaun, Kirilenko, Kryapa, Varonsevic what makes one of the best fronlines in the world these days (probably best front line in the world after USA and Spain at the moment). And with Shved on a rice they can develop even further. However, Russia exactly lacks killing backourt as Lithuania, Greece and Spain had in their prime in 00's.

The teams I'm worried most about is Spain, Brazil, France, Lietuva, Russia, Argentina. I'm pretty much on the same page with everyone else here. I do think France may be more of a threat to us than many think. Yes they play a similar style of basketball. France has good overall passing. I expect USA to win a medal but gold will not be easy for sure. The competition field is finally becoming leveled.
