Pre-Olympic tournament 2012

Wow, a combination of a poor performance by Lithuania and a great performance by Nigeria takes Nigeria through. Let's be honest, Nigeria deserved to make it to the next round based on that performance. They are clearly a superior team to Venezuela.

The commentators were going nuts when Lithuania didn't foul with 27 seconds left. These announcers are absolute idiots. Lithuania had the group won as long as they lost by 9 points or less. Why would they want to jeopardize the six point margin for a remote chance to win against Nigeria? I'm glad Kemzura can do math. I cannot believe that this concept didn't even come dawn on these FIBA nitwits. That quite honestly means they aren't doing their job. I will watch the next game in Spanish.

Greece and Puerto Rico are in a real slobber knocker. Damn it Greece, pull away in the second half! I don't want to see a Lithuania vs. Greece match in the Quarterfinals.

I really feel disappointed when I see Greece having just a 2 point edge against Puerto Rico...

BTW, I hope Zouros understands we need a 3rd center...

Spanoulis being awesome so far! <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/thup.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Great win, great Spanoulis!!!

I really don't understand why Fotsis' minutes are so limited.

I know Printezis is in amazing shape but Fotsis is Fotsis.

Anyway, we won! <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/thup.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Great result for Greece. The right teams are in the quarterfinals. I probably would have predicted New Zealand over Angola but that isn't too much of an upset.

Predictions for the semifinals? Nothing too shocking from me, Greece vs. Russia, Lithuania vs. Dominican Republic. With that said I would love to see a Lithuania vs. FYROM rematch from last year's Eurobasket.

Calling FYROM vs. Dominican Republic a push, I think that Puerto Rico is best positioned for an upset. They have been playing well. I cannot see Nigeria shooting the lights out against Greece like they did against Lithuania. The odds are not on their side and Angola shouldn't pose any threat at all to Russia.

Well, I don't really like the fact that we'll play(if we win Nigeria) Russia in the semis but if we have high expactations we shouldn't care.

I agree, Lithuania clearly got the luckiest break out of the big three in terms of tournament set up and they damn near blew it today. If all goes well, Lithuania will qualify outright leaving the DR/FYROM for the loser of Russia/Greece to pick off. There really isn't any reason why the three European powers shouldn't all be in London but there is enough quality competition still in the tournament to shake things up.

By the way, Theo not sure if you saw the schedule for Friday but it works out well for both of us. Greece plays at 1:30 Caracas time which gives you a game at a reasonable time in Greece and Lithuania gets the late game at 7:30 Caracas time so I will be home from work in time! <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Biggrin' />

Well our defence sucked, and Puerto Rico took some big shots. Really funny how a small place can give rise to a basketball team of so many massively tall men.

Gotta say Puerto Rico is one gritty team. Their defense is all about clotheslining and hack-a-whatever-player-comes-under-the-basket-while-holding-the-ball-aq, and then they have the audacity to say that the refs were on our side!!! <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/crazy.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Crazy' />

Ramos is one of the ugliest things to have happened to basketball, although his freak ass did play well yesterday just because he is so freakishly huge, NO one could play defense against him! Barea was foolish getting himself fouled out, but he is known as being a hot-head, had he stayed in the game things could have been a lot closer.

Against Ramos we, pretty much, realised that someone was missing(Sofo)...!

I agree about the defense. I was pissed because defense is our identity. We just played their game.

We only played good D in the 4th but still, not Greece-like lock down D.

Let's keep the win and try to be better.

Even though we play Nigeria now, it's a very tricky game. They won Lithuania and almost won the host, Venezuela.

Go Greece! <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cool.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Cool' />

It's funny how we complain so much about our team. Our team is just dandy, so let's not get ahead of ourselves. Puerto Rico took a crack at us, and it didn't pan out for them. That's that, so let's move on. We played just fine, so less defense and more offense is what is needed. We need to change our style and adapt to various conditions and teams at all times. All the players in Caracas deserve to be there as far as I'm concerned. That's a rock solid team with plenty of young blood, and some veterans.

'Off topic though': Defense won't help us beat the Spanish and the Yanks. And let me tell you, I definitely want a crack at the Spanish. We need to overcome that mental hurdle called Spain. No Teo! BB is about D and O!! That's what makes the difference between a good team and a great team. It's pointless defending, when you can't make a shot from the arc, or make a FT, a jumper, or play a high energy transition game, and so forth. We need to change, or we can settle for a constant 4 or 5 ranking, and never smell a medal.

Now is the time. We need to grab that opportunity, experiment, let the young blood play their game, risk even at the expense of loss. If we qualify for the Olympics, we won't beat Spain or the USA playing defense. If any of you are happy with going to some fuNking tourney, just so as to make up the numbers, then live with the fact that a medal will be a distant dream. To be the best, you need to beat the best at their own game. It's that simple really. <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Blink' />

Great game between FYROM and Dominican Republic. The DR looked as bad as any team in the first half and were down by as many as 20 only to come back and steal the game from FYROM in the second half. Two brilliant individual performances by Francisco Garcia and of course Bo McCalebb.

This field is full of tough teams and Lithuania will need to fight like hell not to be the second Euro power to fall down today.

Other comments on this tournament:

1) It is a totally different dynamic when the tournament is not held in Europe

2) With that said, Venezuela was a horrible choice for hosts. There is nobody in the stands and the stadium is horribly shaped.

3) No matter where this tournament is hosted in the future, FIBA needs to do something about the schedule. The two teams who will fight for the final Olympic berth on Sunday will have played 5 games in 7 days. That is silly.

Wow these refs are whistle happy. They've been calling every little bit of contact all game and there has also been a ghost foul on Balkman in the first half and Kaukenas just now where contact wasn't a necessary requirement for a foul. <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Tongue' />

Hopefully, they won't ruin the end of this game.

Well, FIBA better not invite any of these clowns to ref in London. They tossed Valanciunas and Ramos for absolutely nothing. As much as I'll take the points Kleiza absolutely hacked Arroyo with about 2 minutes to go on a three point attempt and instead of a foul was awarded with a dunk on the other end. It was the easiest call of the game and despite all the ghost calls that the refs thought they saw, that one actually happened.

Lithuania finally got their act together and put forward a solid team effort. Maciulis and Pocius were particularly strong.

Saras really needs to stop his damn Magic Johnson tricks that almost always lead to turnovers. Nothing is more frustrating than when Lietuva loses the ball because of one of Saras' boneheaded decisions.

Olympic Group A is now so much stronger than Group B. There is going to be one team that could be a contender that won't make the quarterfinals from Group A. My guess is that team will be France.

So I don't get it. Will there be a draw or not? Some sources say Russia and Lithuania goes to A group and other says only draw will decide the place of the teams...

Congrats with great victory!
