Pre-Olympic tournament 2012
Venezuela is a great choice to be host. South America doesn't get enough exposure to top level basketball. Asian and African countries have no chance at all, they may as well save the money and not bother traveling to Vanezuela. The countries that do have a shot are all the European ones, Puerto Rico, and New Zealand.
European teams may have a problem with the distance-the bid trips.

From Europe to Venezuela and then the teams that will qualify will travel to UK!!!

Very tiring(as Kirilenko said).

Charlie Villanueva got cut from the Dominican Republic team.

Quote:Pistons’ Charlie Villanueva cut from Dominican team; Al, Jon Horford on roster

By VINCENT GOODWILL

/ The Detroit News

Pistons forward Charlie Villanueva probably would like to start his 2012 year all over again.

After dealing with injuries for the entire lockout-shortened season for the Pistons — he didn't play any significant minutes — he won't play for the Dominican Republic national team because he's out of shape, head coach John Calipari said.

"Charlie was not in good form when we saw him," Calipari told Deportes en la Z. "He was overweight, and unfortunately, we could not slow down the entire team and it was a decision taken collectively. Last year, Charlie behaved really well with us and his only problem was his weight."

Villanueva never was in camp with the team this summer, contrary to the FIBA.com report that said he had a private workout with the team in New York.

It's believed the team wasn't pleased with his conditioning last summer, which led to the decision, after being a big part of the national team in recent years. An ankle injury slowed his progress and any hopes of getting much playing time for the Pistons this season.

Villanueva posted a picture on Twitter (lockerz.com/s/216607888) of him stepping on a weight scale, showing he's at 243.5 pounds, at least 10 pounds less than his playing weight of 255 pounds. "Lol case closed" he wrote in a Tweet.

He's under contract for the next two seasons with the Pistons, and it seems unlikely they'd use the Amnesty Clause to cut Villanueva's $16.6 million cap figure he'd earn over that time.

"An NBA player like him deserves respect and for respect, we have taken this decision," Calipari said. "I enjoyed coaching him a lot. He is a great player."

Villanueva, 27, played only 13 games for the Pistons last season because of injury.

The Dominican Republic national team has two exhibition games scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday in Kentucky. The Olympic qualifying tournament is set for early July in Venezuela.

Calipari coached the Dominican to a bronze medal in the FIBA Americas Championship in Argentina.

Among those on the 15-player Dominican roster are the Horford brothers — Al, who plays for the Hawks, and Jon, who plays at Michigan. They are from Grand Ledge, Mich. Former Michigan center Josh Asselin also is on the team.

I forgot to add that the prices of tickets are insane as well <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/huh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Huh' />

^^How much? Just for perspective I paid $80 each for my tickets in the nosebleeds for this USA vs Brazil friendly in DC. Tickets are $ 70 to $2500. Who would pay that much for a friendly? Granted it is a double header with the women's teams but it is still crazy. This same seat would have been $15 for most Wizards games. These numbers are probably nothing compared to London tickets though.

Last time I checked, group games were starting at around 600 GBP, and from the quarter finals they climbed into the thousands. Thing is, you don't have guaranteed tickets either, you get them if you're a lucky winner out of a lottery, and you still pay the insane prices <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/crazy.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Crazy' />

Let's not forget also, that if you don't live nearby London, you'll have to pay insane hotel prices as well! Taxis cost a bomb too. We're talking about one of the most expensive cities in the world <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rofl3.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Rofl3' />

600 quid??!! How many games do you get for that? 2 right? That's absolutely nuts. I remember thinking that my Eurobasket tickets were quite steep. I think I paid about $75 each for not that great of seats but it was for two games. That's a lot of money in Lithuanian standards but it was the quarterfinals and Lithuania was playing so the place was packed.

Have you ever been to London to see why it's one of the most expensive cities in the world?! <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rofl3.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Rofl3' />

Angola beat FYROM 88-84!!!! Great result. This could end up being a tricky matchup for Russia if FYROM get second in their group.

By the way FIBA.com has pretty good highlights up if you've missed any of today's games.

Angola vs FYROM was awesome! <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/thup.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

I really wasn't too surprised by the result.

FYROM hasn't prove anything just because he had a great run in a Eurobasket. <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bag.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Bag' />

I think they'll beat New Zeland but they'll get eliminated by Russia in the top-8.

About Greece's game, of course we can't say anything about a game against Jordan.

I really hope we beat Puerto Rico. It's not gonna be an easy one.

Yes, please beat Puerto Rico. The last thing either Greece or Lithuania needs is to face each other in the quarterfinals! Lithuania is going to have a difficult game tomorrow. Watching Greivis Vasquez vs. Ike Diogu right now, errr Venezuela vs. Nigeria. Venezuela can run the court and Vasquez is a really fine FIBA player. Add home court environment (fans, refs, etc.) and Lithuania really needs to take a big lead into half time tomorrow or the game could get ugly.

The idea to put this tournament in Venezuela has been great for my personal life. I'll come home from work tomorrow just in time to watch Lithuania. They really made it convenient for me, thank you FIBA. With that said, the sight lines for the fans in the arena are possibly the worst I have ever seen for a basketball game.

Dominican Republic won Korea 95-85 and they outrebounded them 58-28! <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Ohmy' />

A Martinez guy scored 16 points and grabbed 25(!!!) rebounds and Al Horford nailed 30 points and grabbed 12 rebounds!!! <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/thup.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/thup.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/thup.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Easy win for Lithuania! <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/thup.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

They exposed Venezuela's weaknesses.

No depth and not a reliable second option on offense backing up Vazquez.

If we beat Puerto Rico, I don't think we'll have a problem against Venezuela but you never know.

Good game by Lithuania!

Saras + Kleiza = <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/thup.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Lithuania got past their trickiest opponent. Definitely not their best opponent but given the circumstances Venezuela is a wild card.

The majority game was much closer than the scoreline showed. First, Linas Kleiza is one of the best FIBA players that I can recall. Why can't he play like this in the NBA? Second, the rest of the team needs to step it up or Lithuania will be exposed against better competition. They played well in the second half but it was after they started to pull away. Third, Songaila played just a couple of minutes but had two huge scrappy baskets when Venezuela was still hanging around. His baskets were the turning point for Lithuania.

Now Greece and Lithuania need to do their jobs and win today. Puerto Rico is a reasonably tough team for Greece and will likely be Lithuania's knockout competition but Greece should be able to get it done. I can't see Nigeria posing much of a threat against Lithuania. They are quite one dimensional running through Ike Diogu and I cannot envision that he will get many looks against Lithuania's bigs.
