Greece NT 2012
#61
Well I think we'll abandon the idea that we don't need a 'heavy' center on our team anymore. It's a formula that doesn't work. From what I've read recently, Vouyoukas was cut from the squad because he didn't want to play in the first friendly against Russia, because he didn't want to look bad by being embarassed (?!) by Mozgov or something along those lines. He didn't say those words to Zouros, but complained that he was injured, Zouros got pissed, and cut him from the squad because he suspected something dishonest.

Apparently Zouros also didn't want Kalathis on the squad, because Kalathis bunked off two days from practice with the NT, but the Greek basketball organization forced Zouros to keep Kalathis on the squad. I must say I was disappointed Sloukas was turned away. Kalathis played awful against Nigeria, and he might have done this on purpose, he couldn't even dribble the ball!

If you ask me, a lot of rotten apples need to be cleared out from EOK as well. Too many people are treating it like their own little private club and are doing what they feel like, instead of looking at what is best for the NT.

Same old story if you ask me <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/crazy.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Crazy' />

Huh? Didn't Greece qualify for Beijing through the Olympic Qualifying tournament? I could have sworn that they did and the tournament was in Athens if I remember correctly.

[/quote]

We've only managed to qualify through ONE pre-Olympic tournament and that was in Greece in 2008.

That's pathetic.

I should add that when Vouyoukas feigned injury just before the Russia friendly, the doctor confirmed that he didn't have anything at all.

I genuinely have no idea what you guys are talking about. This is only the second time that FIBA has gone with an Olympic qualifying tournament since the 1970s. Are you referring to Eurobaskets as Olympic qualifiers?

This is Greece's history. Anything before 1992 is absolutely irrelevant in my opinion.

2008 - Qualified via Olympic Qualification Tournament

2004 - Qualified automatically as Hosts

2000 - Failed to qualify via Eurobasket 1999

1996 - Qualified via Eurobasket 1995

1992 - Failed to qualify via Eurobasket 1991

So you're referring to the 1960s and 1970s? <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Blink' />

We have played in the Olympics before skang, but when it came to qualifying for them via pre-Olympic tournaments, we have 0/10 <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rofl3.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Rofl3' />

You guys are really harsh towards your national team. There wasn't even a 3-point line in the 60s and 70s and teams like Mexico qualified. It was a totally different world back then.

If I were Greek, I would be really disappointed with the 2012 result and the 1999 Eurobasket that prevented Greece from qualifying for the 2000 Olympics. Anything before that is just too long ago to fixate on.

Hellas people your team is strong! Please do not judge them too harshly. They just had a bad game. I do not believe the entire team should be restructured. Its easy to see that Hellas is an elite team in the world.

We're #4 in the world and we haven't played like that since 2007.

That's a shame.

There is probably something wrong.

Our players(some of them) don't seem to have the same passion for the NT as they players in 2005-2008.

You can't imagine how dissappointed it is to not play in the Olympics being #4 on the planet.

Anyway, I know we have a good team but something is wrong...

I'm really lost for words with this team. I mean we blew the Olympics because? The Hellenic Basketball Federation needs a mop up for certain. Some players have lost that pathos, that inspiration, that will to win!! I didn't see that against Nigeria, but a desperate team trying to hang on by the skin of their teeth.

I'm thinking we should follow suit and only allow under 23's to play henceforth in all Olympic games and pre-qualifiers. Win or lose something might come out of it. I like that hidden talent scenario, and they'll probably play with a heck of a lot more passion. This brings me back to the fact that the federation needs a total clean-up to rid the cob webs for this to actually occur though. We have more than enough talent for this type of scenario, so maybe a little risk will pay off in the long term.

Let the personalities play the major tournaments only!! Off topic, I'm also thinking FIBA EUROPE should cease any affiliation with FIBA period!! I won't mention all my reasons just yet, but one of them is that FIBA will completely destroy euro-ball if the NBA has it's way. FIBA Europe has the opportunity to split right now, and should take advantage of it. FIBA and the NBA are collaborating to make major changes which will affect not only euro-ball, but the cycle of Euro tournaments, to OUR disadvantage!! <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Biggrin' />

^ I think FIBA Europe is already thinking of splitting from FIBA, like a UEFA/FIFA scenario. We'll see, but Euro ball has the greatest concentration of talent in its organized games, and I don't think anyone from Europe would want that changed <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

Zouros will NOT be continuing with the Greek NT; the mis-use of players, especially our captain, Fotsis is something Kolokythas, the NT's manager is not happy about at all. He already knows who the next coach is going to be, but won't be making announcements yet:

That was inevitable. Between last year's Eurobasket and this year's Olympic qualifies Zouros' results sealed his fate.

There are rumours flying around the Greek media that Obradovic may take charge of the Greek NT but to be honest, I don't really see that coming.

And the reason I don't, is that Zots will have to work with Spanoulis... <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bag.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Bag' />

I just think Obradovic needs a break from it all in general <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

I don't see him coming either, with the money he's earned already, he doesn't have to work anymore for at least a couple of lifetimes <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rofl3.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Rofl3' />

I want to see a different Greek coach take the NT, and of course it goes without saying, Yannakis NEVER again!!!!!

My sentiments exactly. The difference being is, I want a foreign coach to take over the reins of the NT. Why? Politics that's why. Sick tired of their bullshit period.

Our U20's just got hammered again. I don't know what the fuNk is going on with these players, but to finish in a top 8 then get hammered by 30+ from a Lithuanian team, leaves a lot to be desired. Obviously someone's not doing their job right.

Since I don't know who these players are, is anyone worth mentioning from this sorry ass crop? Anyone?? I think were

going from bad to worse. And what about the team we sent to Australia recently, a so called Greek 'B' team that got hammered by 40+ in some of the friendlies, is a total disgrace. What the hell is going on? Was it a geriatric 'B' team maybe? We have a serious problem, and it's not funding or some bullshit like that, but talent.. I'm appalled..

Let's see how the U16's progress. If they do!!!.. <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/baby.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Baby' />

Please, make it happen! <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/thup.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

I really think it's the best choice. Him or Giannakis.
