NBA have announced changes in the play offs
It is nothing extreme; they will basically stay the same. But there has been a change in the order of teams.
I'll just use the last season's ranking to illustrate the example.
Take confrence West:
Southwest - Played/Won/Lost
1 Phoenix Suns 81 53 28
2 L.A Clippers 81 46 35
3 L.A Lakers 81 44 37
4 Sacramento Kings 82 44 38
Northwest
1 San Antonio Spurs 81 62 19
2 Dallas Mavericks 81 60 21
3 Memphis Grizzlies 81 48 33
4 New Orleans Hornets 81 38 43
Pacific
1 Denver Nuggets 81 44 37
2 Utah Jazz 81 40 41
3 Seattle SuperSonics 81 34 47
4 Minnesota Timberwolves 81 33 48
Those rankings would seed the teams for the play offs as follows:
1 Suprs - Northwest Champion
2 Phoneix - Southwest Champion
3 Denver - Pacific Champion
4 Dalls - Best record of the othjer 5 qualified teams
5 Memphis
6 Clippers
7 Kings
8 Lakers
That would make Spurs v lakers and Dallas v memphis in the top side of the draw and Phoenix v Kins and Denver v Clippers in the other side of the draw
Dallas last season complained. They were the 2nd best team in the west, and instead of avoiding Spurs till the final, they'd have to play them in the second round. Also memphis found themselves with a poor draw, after being 5th they get to play against the 2nd best side and not the 4th.
So, to the changes - What are NBA doing from next season?
They will take the 3 champions and the best 2nd and then rank them. It would mean:
1 Spurs - Division Champion, 62 wins
2 Dallas - Best 2nd team, 61 wins
3 Phoenix
4 Denver
...I hope you understood it <!-- s:dry: --><!-- s:dry: -->
