Are the Artland Dragons a team of destiny? If Thursday nights performance indicates anything, the miraculous post-season run for the Dragons will write a Championship Series chapter as Head Coach Chris Fleming and his 8th seeded team upset defending Champion Rheinenergie Koln 84-60 in a decisive Game 5 at the Rheinenergie Dome in Koln Live on Premiere TV. After an upset sweep of league heavyweight ALBA Berlin, a clear title contender, the underrated Artland squad overcame Koln adding to their tremendous season. Now, in the Bundesliga Finals, Artland meets Bamberg in what could be the ultimate test for this seasons "Cinderella Squad". Drawing on the home court and experience from a successful First Round Game 5 win over Bremerhaven, Head Coach Sasa Obradovic and his Koln team seemed to have the upper hand heading into action. In 2006, it was Koln's surprise run to the title capped by Immanuel McElroys Game Winner which added to the fantastic Bundesliga history. Now, one year later, underdog Artland was wearing the "Glass Slipper". These two teams have been on the highest Bundesliga stage before as both battled for the German Cup title back in late April. Koln won that game, but the competitive intensity in Hamburg was a foreshadowing of this outstanding playoff series. Despite playing on the road, it was the Dragons who came out with energy and activity racing to a 1Q lead. Eventually, the guests claimed a 23-15 1Q. Koln rallied in the 2Q but Artland held a 40-35 advantage at the halftime break. With both teams understanding how important the 3Q became, it was Artland who made the game's decisive run outscoring the hosts 26-14 in the 3rd. Leading 66-49 going into the final ten minutes, Artland cruised to the victory and punched their ticket to the Bundesliga Finals. Artland's balanced team attack put 4 players in double figures and received outstanding production from their entire roster. Roll players contributed with quality to their win. Dragon PG Filberto Rivera capped his strong Semifinal series with a team best 16pt 5reb effort while C Darius Hall (5reb) and Bryan Bailey added 13pt apiece. Adam Hess added 11. Meanwhile, Koln received 14pt (4 for 8 threes) from Devin Green, 11pt from Immanuel McElroy and 11pt 10reb from Aleksander Nadjfeji. Artland hit 54% from the floor compared with Kolns 35% and the Dragons sank 15-17 FT (88%) to Koln's 8-13 (61%). The biggest difference in the game came in the lane where Artland converted 21 of 29 (72%) shots in the paint while Koln managed only 10 for 24 (41%). Certainly the team defense from Artland should get much credit in this decisive Game 5 win. Looking ahead, both Bamberg and Artland have battle tested teams who have faced adversity at different times throughout this Bundesliga season. On paper, despite their difference in records, the two teams match up well with both sides possessing several strengths. The intriguing Championship Series Matchup between Bamberg and Artland tips off Sunday night June 17th from JAKO Arena in Bamberg in Game 1 Live on Premiere TV at 5:05pm.

Alba Berlin, who finished this season in play-off quarterfinals despite they were on the top after regular season, is looking for Bosman replacement for center Jova Stanojevic. First name on the list is a center of Panionios Athens Vladislav Dragojlovic (206-C-79, agency: Beo Basket) who showed very good performance against all top Greek teams and especially during the Greek play-off.

Panionios reached semifinals of Greek play-off where Euroleague champion Panathinaikos stopped them while in FIBA EuroCup Akasvayu Girona eliminated them also in quarterfinals. Dragojlovic in the past played 3 years for Crvena Zvezda and with them won two National Cups.

Telekom Baskets Bonn signed Eddie Basden. He had an important role in Fenerbahçe's domestic success last season and still has lots of fans here. Good luck to him in Germany...

Yes. From what one is hearing, Basden seems to be a hard working kind of player. Good defender, rebounder, solid passer. Should fit in. I was quite surprised when I heard about the signing in the first place, because Basden seemed to me to be too big a name for a low budget club like Bonn. But as the management keeps saying, they just had the luck to be at the right place in the right time.

Well, the German basketball federation would love him to play for the NT. In fact, headcoach Bauermann has already stated that "it would be foolish" if they didn't look into that.

However, I think this thing has been overplayed a little bit. The source of all this speculation has been a magazine interview in which Kaman was jokingly asked about his German roots and a possible engagement for the German NT. Kaman answered that it'd surely be nice to play alongside Dirk Nowitzki, but that he'd have to betray his country for that. To me, this doesn't sound like someone who wants to play for Germany. And it's all depending on his commitment.

Personally, I think this is the wrong way. But typical for the German federation that already persuaded Shawn Bradley and Julian Sensley into playing for Germany. Without much success by the way. Both were rather mediocre. Improving the youth system and giving youngsters some playing time in the German Bundesliga (the main problem in my opinion) would be wiser investments.

It appears that things about Kaman are actually pretty serious and he might get the German citizenship soon.

Quote:Back and ankle injuries wound up limiting Chris Kaman to 56 games in a season that, for a time, appeared to have Most Improved Player award potential for the Clippers' 7-footer, given Kaman's statistical rise to averages of 15.7 points, 12.7 rebounds and 2.8 blocks. [b]Yet it appears that Kaman is on the verge of having his German citizenship granted and setting himself up for a busy summer, which would seriously improve Dirk Nowitzki's chances of realizing his dream this summer by taking his country's national team to the Olympics.

Germany is one of 12 teams participating in a July qualifying tournament in Greece that will fill the remaining three spots for the 12-team men's basketball field in Beijing. Once he heard of Kaman's interest in representing Germany, which happened around the same time that rumblings of a Jason Kidd trade to Dallas began to percolate seriously, Nowitzki was pushing for Kaman just as hard as he was for Kidd, having maintained for years that a trip to the Olympics would mean as much to him as winning an NBA championship.

I think support of Nowitzki could be crucial in this situation.

Maybe you should start a thread for German national team? Although this topic is called "German basketball" and could include almost anything <!-- sSmile --><!-- sSmile -->
