BBL 2008/2009

ALBA's didn't have enough passion left after their long season, including EL Top16 participation, which was their highlight. When that happens, a team of nine Americans and three Germans, a young, hungry, incredibly passionate group, can take you down. Especially if you commit additional mistakes, which ALBA clearly did. It already started in their long first round series against Paderborn, which they needed five games for. As a consequence they were tired in Game 1 against Bonn, lost that one, clearly lost Game 2 due to own mistakes in Bonn [Pavicevic got T'd up 2 minutes before the end, which Bonn used to get their first lead - but that was only one of the many mistakes], then they dominated in Game 3 and 4 to come back, and Game 5 was Bonn's best game of the season. They hit from everywhere. So, lucky but somehow deserved win for Bonn, they just played their hearts out.

Overall the level of play hasn't increased, not at all. Too americanised, bad coaching, more like a US minor league than a European league. ALBA is the only team which plays really nice, structured offense. We had Bamberg a few years ago when they were still coached by Bauermann, they were defensive minded but also disciplined on offense. But that's about it. Bundesliga was really watchable around 2003-2005, when the old foreigner rules still existed. Remember that Kaukenas, Aleks. Nadjfeji, Capin, Aleks. Radojevic [cough], Nnamaka, DeJuan Collins, Mat. Mamic, Spencer Nelson, Kasun, Milisavljevic, Eidson, Stanojevic, Michael Wright, Szewczik, Janicenoks, Rencher, Helmanis, Mallet, Gortat, Sasa Obradovic, Marko Pesic, Tyrone Ellis all played in the league during that timespan. It was a good level. It all started going downhill when they opened the floodgates for the American market in 05/06, and I don't see any improvement soon.

I see. Though isn't it a coach's job to motivate the players? Alba did quite well in EL and that must have influenced players as you mentioned. But if you look at some of the top teams in Europe they would have even worse motivation in their domestic leagues. So on one hand Pavicevic took Alba to El Top 16 but on the other hand the team struggled in domestic playoffs and were knocked out in the semis. Does this result put any pressure on the coach?

Yes. He's getting a lot of criticism for not being able to have his team motivated in the playoffs. Not reaching Euroleague is a desaster for them. There is a clause in his contract which enables the club to get rid of him when they don't reach the Euroleague, but their management has been declaring in interviews that they want him to stay.

Well, he clearly outcoached Pavicevic in the semis and seemed to have the upper hand on Krunic in terms of ingame coaching in game 1 of the finals as well. But I expect Oldenburg to recover. While we can expect Yarbrough to do a great job of containing Paulding, Gardner shouldn't have another off night again. Their biggest strength is probably their ability to win close games which don't seem to go very well for them. They hardly panic. Should be some exciting matches waiting for us.

Quote:EWE Baskets Oldenburg beat Telekom Baskets in Bonn, taking revenge for the home loss in game 1 and regaining the home court advantage, as the German League playoffs continue being unpredictable and full of surprises.

Oldenburg took a small lead early in the game which they would never give up untill the end of the game, beating Telekom Baskets infront of their 6000 fans (sold-out). Bonn tried to fight back in the second half, but their effort was to short. Final score 70-79

Telekom Baskets: Rowland 19, Bowman 14, Bowler 8, Johnson 7, Flomo 6, Strasser 6, Frazier 5, Yarbrough 3, Kolodziejski 2

Oldenburg: Gardner 18, Majstorovic 17, Paulding 16, Scekic 13, Foster 9, Pekovic 3, Boumtje Boumtje 3

No really, I feel personally insulted by how the team played on Thursday. Shame. Hope they show a reaction tomorrow.
