i m new here, hi to everyone first of all. i'm from italy maccabi's fan and finally ended our worst season of decade. there were many reasons for it and i was sure that ended like this, since beginning:

to loose morris and halperin(more than vujcjc) it was really something that i couldn't imagine by a team like maccabi who always wanna be in f4,and mainly i can't understand it if u loose those players and than give 2,5 mln dollar to arroyo, the main ,main , reason of the disaster. Yes a so irrational player ,who always play basket just for his self and never for the team. who isn't maccabi fan can't imagine how many errors ,turnover, forced action he spent all euroleague long and if your point guard have so percent, have so many turnovers and doesn't buld any action for the team, u can't play basket well.

but there' s another reason for this season: maccabi play exclusively an american basket style. I mean that maccabi just play searching for his centers as the only offensive way. today in europe the basket is changed a lot and now the basket is the "jugoslavia's way of play". yes, today every great team play as ex jugoslavian tradition, a perimetral basket. Only searching the under- basket game without searching any long shoot option, is a suicide.if u just play with your pf or center under the basket as your only way to offend, today in euyrope is very very easy to defend you. i can't understand how maccabi coaches didn't understand it and try to build different choise.if we wanna be again one of the best teams next year, we need to confirm ely and fischer( how i love this player)as starting five and to sign at least two great shooters and a new guard.casspi and brown are ok from the bench and gaines too but that's all. a great team who had a so bad season, needs a revolution. rumors actually doesn't give me many hope..

Welcome to the site moxur!

I agree that it was a horrific European season for Maccabi. Arroyo is not a good enough point guard to lead the team without substantial help...when Marcus Brown first joined, he supplied that help and Maccabi did well, but he's fallen off and so have Maccabi. Fischer was a pleasant surprise for Maccabi fans, no doubt. Like Morris last season, he brought in as a rotation player but was turned into a main option...unlike Morris, however, he just wasn't aggressive enough to carry the team very far without help. Casspi and Eliyahu both improved this season, which was great to see. With a much lower budget next year, Maccabi will have to get creative or get used to watching the Final Four on TV.

hi kobimel. well, i live in italy and i don't know anything about next year budget. u have news about a lower budget next year?i'd be very disappointed beacuase there are already rumors about fischer in spain ,our greatest player this year
#10
Do you read Hebrew? If you do, this is a great article about next year's budget:

<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://sport.walla.co.il/?w=/151/1450652" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://sport.walla.co.il/?w=/151/1450652</a><!-- m -->

If not, well a quick summary would be that Maccabi went far over their set budget this year and will pay for doing so next year. The Israeli channels 10 and 1 are also unlikely to continue showing their games in Israel, or at least will pay much less money for the rights to do so, meaning more lost money for Maccabi. Plus, the lost money from failing to advance in the Euroleague will obviously take its toll.

I'm not familiar with the Fischer rumors. Do you have a link by any chance? I do know that Eliyahu is rumored to be in talks with Tau about joining them on a long-term contract next season.
#11
yes i've read somewhere (but don't remember) about fischer in spain. many teams want him as obvious but spain it seems the destination. no,i don't read ebrew. about ely yes rumors about tau are sure. well now we can say for sure, that this year maccabi spent in the worst way his last high budget(2,5 mln for arroyo it was a crasy step. with that money u bring with u for example both kus and nielsen) altought wasn't anyway a great bugdet this yera too. the things u wrote about our future let me stop any hope for another f4 in the next 5 ys because when a team is in a so deep crisis as i learned by u, any hope has gone. so now the problem is; what an ambitious team can do to stay at the top? maccabi is always a good team to choise americans, but now i ll do something different. i'll try to pay scouts for the best place to found new champions specially in the country who create new way of play basket: young players from ex yugoslavia countries as croatia, serbia, or place like lituania were players build as flowers in netherland. u have to ,make a revolution. even in israeli championship there are good players but is still a championship were the way of play is still too american ,instead of what euroleague is. i don't know well israeli championship, wich are for u best players there? last thing is: is pini the right coach to play a perimetral basket as now in euroleague every team play? pini won with the team of the decade but is the right one to rebuild a team?
#12
Hey moxur, welcome to the forum. Thanks for sharing your thoughts about Maccabi. I agree with your opinion. Arroyo was one of the main reasons why Maccabi had such a poor season. How many times he penetrated to the basket and got blocked? How many times he took very risky shots?

Maccabi needs to start building for the next season. And if their budget gets lower it won't be too easy to find quality players. But on the other hand that could help the team in the long run.

Olympiacos seems to be finding their game lately.
#13
hi vilius! well, if u tell somebody and try to describe what arroyo eas this season, it will be impossibile sombody believe u! irratinal penetration, turnovers and specually a guard who doesn't make run the ball to others teammate. a distaseter! your land is a land were players grew up so easily. is one of the place were maccabi has to find his future. i always believed u can build a great team with unknown players because there are many great players verywhere even in second divisions of europe but u need talent scout in all europe round not just in the states as maccabi. for example actually there are many great players in euroleague who earnes less than 500.000 us dollars. so it means that if u have scouts in the right place, u can build a good future anyway. u can't imagine i appreciate cibona's or partizan's or olimpja's policy . they always grew up young players beacuse don't have good budget and altoungh they ll nver win, they always have good teams. with a little bit budget more than them u can have a good team, but mainly u shoud play the kind of basket now euroleague is. so scouts and scouts in the right place, is the only chance for us. consier also that maccabi this year was so easy to preview how offens with only one option under the basket. changing style and philosofy make u closer to the top teams, that's why i have doubt about pini. is the right one to make a phylosophy changement?
#14
Speaking of Pini's philosophy, I doubt he'll ever change it. He is simply too old for that. He is matured as a coach and it's too late. Maccabi always played American basketball. First of all because they had many American players. Was there a season when they had more player for USA than this year? Marcus Brown, D'or Fischer, Chester Simmons, Dee Brown, Charles Gaines and I would count Arroyo as a half-American <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

However, it is hard to imagine seeing Maccabi playing differently.

P.S. We have a thread for Maccabi here http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/index.p...-20082009/
#15
vilius your way of view maccabi technical crisis is exactly my same: arroyo, too amercain players , an american basket, and pini. to defend maccabi's offensive game it was really easy this year and the fact u were not able to change it means u are a coach who can have good season just if u have magic players. no invenction, no changement. my only hope is that maccabi can't play just for the top 16een, so i believe they will invent something even with a low budget, but if they search a solution in the usa ,they will have another terrific season. about top 16 i'm surprised about unicaja. they have a great coach and great players, i'm so surpried even if partizan ,as i wrote before, is one of that team that i esteem more for them policy.

vilius, lithuanian crisis show some young players who maccabi could be interested in? not center pleaseSmile we have a lot and we need to play far from the basket too somethimesSmile
#16
There aren't many players at this time in Lithuania that could play an important role in EL team. You probably know Zalgiris players already. Rytas also has mainly the same Lithuanians since last season when they played in Euroleague. Since Maccabi always aims for Final Four and does not try some let's say 3-year-plan they need players that can play in a high level instantly. I would say Jonas Maciulis, Paulius Jankunas, Mantas Kalnietis and maybe Mindaugas Lukauskis could do the job. The others are still growing as players.
#17
but if kobi is right with a lower budget we just can have younger players and build a thre ys plans. anyway there are actually very good players from everywhere that can be istant players for a great team and they don't earn a lot. the problem is that in maccabi there are coaches amercansaddicted!<img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />
#18
kobi, u are from israel. how in erez fans and club analyzed a so bad season and how they are planning the new year?
#19
I am from Israel, but I currently live in California. My Maccabi fan friends seem disappointed in the season, but I haven't really discussed next season with them. My guess is that they still have high expectations, since after all this is Maccabi we're talking about. There are a few Maccabi fans on this forum who could probably go into more detail.

Maccabi are never patient enough to truly develop players, but maybe that will change now. They just signed Raviv Limonad, a solid Israeli guard who played for Le Mans, and I'm hoping that they'll give him opportunities.

We can continue the discussion about Maccabi at the link that Vilius supplied, in the Israeli basketball forum, if you'd like. <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />
