Ramunas Butautas might not be the last coach to be fired from Zalgiris by Vladimir Romanov this season. Krepsinis.net reports that Darius Maskoliunas was not even allowed to travel with the team to Vilnius to play the third game of LKL finals. Security was told not to let the coach on the bus. However, the players showed support to their coach and left the bus. Then the decision was made to let Maskoliunas coach Zalgiris in this game.

There are at least a couple of potential motives why the previously mentioned incident occurred. According to one theory, Maskoliunas refused to intentionally lose LKL finals so that their arch rivals Lietuvos Rytas will get a direct qualification to the next year's Euroleague. This topic has been widely discussed in Lithuanian media for a while now. Maskoliunas himself ruled out the possibility of letting Rytas win LKL.The fact that Romanov's football club FBK Kaunas was involved in match fixing scandals in Lithuanian league doesn't make this theory less likely to be true.

The other explanation of the decision to fire Maskoliunas is less related to conspiracy theories. Vladimir Romanov is said to be very disappointed with the way his team lost the game two of LKL finals which was played in Kaunas.

On the other hand, both teams exchanged wins throughout the regular season and this fact is a clear indication that there's little between the quality of Rytas and Zalgiris. Losing the game at home after a win in Vilnius shouldn't surprise anyone. Moreover, replacement of the third coach in one season in the middle of LKL finals because of a single loss is rather an extraordinary event.

It is also possible that the coach got in a conflict with the owner because of the methods of his work. During the short period of time when Ramunas Butautas was the head coach, there was a serious disagreement between him and Romanov who decided that there must be some boxing elements included in the training. There were also reports that Romanov was giving orders to the coach by telling which players should play and when they need to be substituted.

Darius Maskoliunas is the third head coach for Zalgiris this season after Gintaras Krapikas and Ramunas Butautas. Zalgiris is currently losing 1-2 against Rytas in LKL finals following today's 81-83 loss in Vilnius. Maskoliunas was asked about the incident during the press conference but he refused to make any comments.

If this story is real then it's a pathetic move by Romanov. Not that I'm surprised at all. What do you think is the real reason of the decision to fire Maskoliunas? To me it doesn't make sense if he'll be fired because of the loss in Kaunas. First of all, that loss was only the first for Žalgiris in the series. Secondly, they didn't get beat by 30 points. Thirdly, the truth is that LKL finals mean little to Žalgiris (of course it's still a title and they play against arch rivals) since they have Euroleague A license in their pocket. Therefore, even if they lose the finals they won't lose anything else. So if the coach is doing a bad job, you can wait a week or two when the series are over and fire him for his poor coaching. Do you think that putting Markevičius in the head coach position would turn the series in favour for Žalgiris? Wouldn't that be a guarantee that the series will be lost?

Yesterday's report that Darius Maskoliunas will be fired came true today. According to the clubs' website the coach was forced to leave the team because he violated the contract. More specifically, the part which is called 'an intentional negative influence towards the outcome of the game'.

It is worth a mention that there were rumours in the media before that the winner of LKL finals will be Lietuvos Rytas because Zalgiris sold it. However, these rumours were linked to the owner of Zalgiris, Vladimir Romanov.

FBK Kaunas, football club owned by Romanov, was also involved in match fixing scandals. The owner responded to such talks by accusing other clubs of doing the same thing and denying that his club was buying or selling games. The story ended with FBK Kaunas leaving the top flight of Lithuanian football.

Vladimir Romanov has made similar accusations towards the Scottish football after his club Hearts struggle in the Scottish Premier League.

After the decision to fire Darius Maskoliunas was made, Romanov offered head coach's position to the assistant coach Gvidonas Markevicius who refused the offer.

Zalgiris needs a new coach before game four of LKL finals which will be played on Thursday. According to LKL rules, the clubs are not allowed to sign new players nor coaches after March 1. This leaves only one option to Zalgiris. The new coach must come from within the club.

Luckily, they have an experienced coach working at the club. It's Sarunas Sakalauskas who is currently Director of Sport. Although the official announcement on who'll take charge of the club has not yet been made.

After these events Lithuanian betting companies temporary suspended all bets related to LKL finals. Basketnews.lt reports that the betting odds will be reviewed and could be accepted tomorrow.

Yeah, it's so absurd... Romanov seems more and more like a nutcase with billions in his pocket.

Romanov is nuts. I remember his days in Hearts. He sacked every day players and coachs...

Assistant coach retired, the team will be without a coach next game. Dainius Å alenga will lead the team <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Rolleyes' />

The ban to sign new players has been cancelled after the club has paid its debts to Ratko Varda. Hopefully we won't have to wait for too long for the rumours about new players and coach to appear.

According to some reports, Rimantas Grigas has an offer from Zalgiris to be the new head coach. I'm not sure how reliable these rumours are. But if they are true then once again Zalgiris will have a worse coach than Rytas. The fact that once again the coach will be coming 'from the inside' is even more disappointing.

I like Grigas. More over, we still don't know what will be Rytas coach. Grigas is a good specialist with potential to become even better. To say one more thing, Kurtinaitis isn't a peace of gold as well. Rytas comes up with smart management first of all. Kurtinaitis didn't do anything worth mentioning this season, except that Rytas played very well at the begging of Euroleague, than Kurtinaitis failed to produce anything new for the rest of the season. grigas is not a bad choice at all, he knows youngsters well, and some players might be comfortable with his role.

Anyway, Grigas might kill his career with going to current Žalgiris.
