LKL 2009/10 Season

Quote:LKL to have 13 teams next season

LKLNext season could be historical for LKL (Lithuanian Basketball League) as there might the highest number of participating teams. Rudupis and Juventus could be two new teams to join LKL. Rudupis are NKL (second division) champions and qualified for LKL. Though they need to upgrade their arena in order to be allowed to play in LKL.

Meanwhile Juventus finished third in NKL but they could join LKL if they pay an admission fee which is 100.000 euros. Unlike Rudupis, Juventus meets LKL arena requirements as they opened a new arena this year.

It was decided that there will be a limit of four foreign player per team next season. The limit should be decreased to three in 2010/2011 season.
Respect and thanks for everything:

Alvertis, Bodiroga, Jasikevicius, Radja, Wilkins, Vrankovic, Fotsis, Rebraca, Kattash, Gentile, Koch, Middleton, Kutluay, Rogers, Papadopoulos, Becirovic, Tomasevic, Siskauskas, Pekovic, Lakovic, Vujanic, Chatzivrettas, Maljkovic, Spanoulis and many more to follow in the near future.

Zalgiris got humiliated by Perlas which is basically B team Rytas as they lost at home 75-78. Even with Krapikas as a head coach Zalgiris still somehow managed to win against much weaker teams. Though Butautas is one of a kind who can produce shocks that are, however, not in his favour. This is Zalgiris' second loss in less than a month in domestic leagues.

There can be no excuses after such losses. To me it sounds hilarious to hear comments such as "we were tired" etc. This team must win against teams like Perlas even with all the starting lineup missing. And rather comfortably I would say.

I think that the team is not a good shape both psychologically and physically. Why? We can only guess. Maybe the players have troubles adjusting to the new coach. This could be possible since the team started showing worse results not at the time when Butautas was appointed but after a month or so. Is it a coincidence or is Butautas taking down yet another team?

Another very important factor is that Zalgiris players have no balls, well at least vast majority of them. And that's not the problem of this season. Where do you think those losses in away games in Euroleague come from? Anyone managing a club like Zalgiris and having at least 2 brain cells would make some conclusions out of such pathetic record in away games. But instead we have psychologically weak players combined with even poorer coach. But this is a long discussion which I don't mind if here's anyone to talk to.

Back to the game against Perlas. This win is not only special to these young players because they defeated much stronger team but there are some other facts that make it even sweeter. I'll try to write them down:

1) Perlas' point guard, Zydrunas Kelys, who was a player of Zalgiris but was kicked out because of the lack of discipline tonight had 22 points, 10 rebounds and 6 assists.

2) Zalgiris lost not against Rytas but against their farm club.

3) Perlas is coached by Roberts Stelmahers, former player of Rytas, who just started his coaching career.

4) The game was played in Kaunas Sports Hall, home of Zalgiris, and not in their training gym where they used to play some of their LKL games against weak teams previous season.

5) Perlas didn't have their best player Jonas Valanciunas, who joined Lietuvos Rytas.

6) Perlas is 9th in LKL with 6-10 record.

7) Average age of Perlas is 19.4.

Rytas beat Žalgiris 90:81 and finished first at the regular season.

Miloševič came with big game for Rytas while scoredf 20 points and 9 assists. He's really good at penetration and pretty good at p&r game.

Gecevičius nailed crucial three point shot and fished the game with 17.

Šalenga 20 points for Žalgiris. Nice game!

Probably for the first time this season the game between these two teams was rather enjoyable. Even though it didn't seem like it will be that close with Bjelica, Baynes and Jomantas - all out with injuries.

Milosevic was a pleasant surprise. If he continues to progress then he might become a good purchase after all. Though it's hard to judge him after this game because Žalgiris's defence wasn't the best.

Only the final minutes of the game reminded of the atmosphere that we had in these game two years ago in every game when Rytas and Žalgiris met each other.

What the hell is Begic doing in Žalgiris?

Will this be a decisive game for Maskoliūnas? He was very disappointed with his team during the press conference.

History has taught us that you can't make accurate predictions based on just game so I won't say that Rytas will surely take LKL but they have good chances for sure.

LKL semi-finals start today with Lietuvos Rytas hosting Juventus in Vilnius in a best-of-three series. Tomorrow Šiauliai will play against Žalgiris in Kaunas.

I think there's no doubt who will meet in the final yet again. It would be nice if Šiauliai manage to win one game against Žalgiris but I can't see that happening.

Isn't it to 2 victories, not 3?

Yes, it is. In English a maximum number of games is used when describing the series. Therefore it's best-of-three. For example, LKL Finals will be best-of-seven.

Rytas crushed Juventus 108:61 in the first game.

As it was expected, Lietuvos Rytas and Žalgiris will meet once again in the finals after both teams swept the semi-final series 2-0 against Juventus and Šialiai respectively. Šiauliai were close to an upset in both games but they couldn't hold on their lead till the final whistle.
