Great start by Argentina. No excitement from the US. They aren't pressuring and getting the turnovers that they've gotten in previous games.
A few interesting matchups in the quarterfinals. The bottom bracket is all euro teams while the top bracket is rest of the world (3 americas and Australia).
We'll see the south american rivalry of Argentina vs. Brazil, a rematch of the Eurobasket 2011 final and the historic rivalry between Russia and Lithuania dating back to the Soviet days. Really exciting matchups.

I couldn't watch Spain vs Brazil because they weren't showing it in my hotel room. However they were showing the US vs Canada women's football semifinal which was an absolutely spectacular match (watch the highlights) so it worked out for the best. At least they are showing the US vs Argentina now.
Was Spain obviously tanking? I saw that they were winning in the first half.

There is no way to prove Spain tanked by watching the games. Spain only beat Great Britain by +2 or +3. Then Spain lost to Russia be a narrow margin, +4 I believe. Both games Spain was leading then lost momentum in the end. The Brazil game was very simialar to the Great Britain and Russia games. There is an establihed pattern. There is no way to say they tanked. I believe its possible they tanked BUT its hard to prove.

Games begin tommorow. Wednesday 8th August!
Quarter final schdule
Russia vs Lietuva
France vs Spain
Brazil vs Argentina
USA vs Australia
It seems the quarter finals are full of rival nations. Russia vs Lietuva are two countries from old USSR. France vs Spain are two Western European power houses. Brazil vs Argentina are two FIBA/FIFA Americas rivals. All 3 games are rivals of historical legend. Many battles fought between these nations on and off the field or court. It should be intense. USA vs Australia are two english speaking countries but there is not much rivalry in this sport. USA and Australia are cultural cousins. I expect the Aussies to fight in the begining.

Sorry guys I've been busy! I'm working on the Standings today! I'll have them up in a few.
Day 7 semi-finals August 10th
Spain vs Russia
Argentina vs USA
I have some comments about the USA team. It seems that this USA team is a jump shoting team. The old strategy with the USA was to clog the lane and limit them to jumpers. That doesn't work with this team. The Americans are content with shooting 30 3pts a game. USA has allowed its opponets to score. Liths scored 95pts, Argentina 97, Australia 86 this is an average of 92.6 points a game. The USA allows teams to score a great ammount.
PREDICT AWAY GUYS!!

I think that it will be two close games. Russia has the mental advantage against Spain but I think that Spain will do everything to get to the final. Hopefully for Spain, they have analysed what they did wrong against France. But Russia has a good chance to win the game
Spain: +4
Argentina will play even harder against the USA and will fight for every possession. They will try to take out the rhythm so that the USA can't run. If the USA can run then the game is over. The USA also have to hope that their shots keep falling and the shots of Argentina don't. But I think that the USA will win with three points
USA: +3

I think that Spain will win but that prospect doesn't excite me too much so let's go with Russia.

If we're predicting the medal round I want the following:
Russia +5
USA +22
I sincerely hope that the US blows Spain away. Spain has been a disgrace in this tournament despite being a phenomenal team and a close victory by the US won't give me the same level of satisfaction.

I really want USA to tear Spain apart. A +40 win would be awesome! I don't see it happening though.
Argentina vs Russia is anybody's game but I think that Russia will be a bit more disappointed by their semi-final loss. Although, it's a game that the winner wins a medal so, I think Russia will be prepared. I just see Argentina winning in a close one. It's probably their last run -being all together- in a major competition.

Russia is a team to respect.
They have succeed in all those tournaments through team basketball which was a work of Blatt. And of course the fact that their superstar was an all-around, unselfish player helped big time.
Respect to Russia and respect to Argentina's old dogs as well.
What a great game, full of suspense. <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/thup.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
Now, of course, I'm looking forward to USA's walk in the park! <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cool.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
