PREDICTIONS! Which Group is stronger, group A or B?
#81
Respect to Lietuva!! Lebron James took the game over and saved USA! <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

That was a great game! I don't think the game was refed badly. For FIBA it was ok. Lietuva was just on fire similar to how USA was against Nigeria. USA could not play more physical on defense because of the way the game was being called. Seriously USA played a great offensive game and B+ effort on defense. If USA would have had a better free throw showing >+.

Here is a wild prediction: Russia is going to win Group B.

Good prediction Skangles. Thank you Skangles. <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Laugh' />

As head-to-head competition is the top tiebreaker, Russia has already won Group B irrespective of the results of the next games (see link below).

http://www.fiba.com/downloads/event/eng/...ss-Kit.pdf

Lithuania played great today and the loss to the US isn't such a bad thing so long as the US beats Argentina and Spain beats Brazil. Remember that France holds the tiebreaker against Argentina due to the head-to-head result. Russia really mixed it up today. Right now we're on pace for the following quarterfinals (you could swap Spain and Brazil depending on Monday's result and something tells me that Spain won't be hustling too hard for the win):

USA vs. Australia/Great Britain

Spain vs. Argentina

Russia vs. Lithuania

France vs. Brazil

Lithuania has looked much better in the past two games despite the loses. If they keep playing like this and the results fall like I noted above, Lithuania will have a fairly reasonable chance to make the Gold medal game despite their poor group results.

First things first though, Lithuania needs to get past a feisty Tunisia team who has played much better than anybody expected and really deserve a win in London. Hopefully, that will not come against Lithuania.

Russia played better than Spain. I didn't expect them to win against Spain but when I was watching the game I thought: Spain is going to lose. Russia is looking very good and they could make a deep run. The guards of Spain need to step up their game: Navarro is playing well but this is become he isn't in shape because the injury he had. Rudy is scoring that much and he takes to many bad shots, Calderon needs to play defense because that really is a problem for Spain. Llull isn't playing well, he also take too many bad shots but Scariolo isn't playing him the way he play at Real Madrid

Lithuania played good against the USA. At one moment I thought that they were going to win. They really fought hard against team USA. But then stars like Lebron step up and seal the game. Hopefully for Lithuania they keep up playing like this.

My prediction is BRAZIL VS SPAIN will be a TANK fest. Whoever Tanks or sandbags to the bottom will avoid USA. Winning is losing. <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Rolleyes' /> <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/crazy.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Crazy' />

Lithuania gave me a massive scare. They were down by 11 in the third quarter! I cannot handle this so early in the morning! Nothing satisfies me more than the Russia vs. Lithuania rivalry especially when it counts. Russia has wiped the floor with Lithuania in a series of friendlies, can Lithuania finally pull it off?

Brazil is going to beat Spain, guys. These are two teams at the opposite end of the spectrum. Spain is savvy, they've been around the block. They understand that a loss now is worth it. They have nothing to prove to anybody.

Brazil, however, has historically underperformed. They have everything to prove and I think that they'll play more fearless. They aren't stupid and will realize that avoiding the US is a wise thing to do but they've already played the US well in DC and a win over Spain would legitimize their program.

I hope that I am wrong but a Brazil win seems way more likely to me.

Another point to think about is the fact that the IOC already disqualified several women's badminton teams for tanking. I'm sure that they'll be watching this game closely. It would be way more difficult to prove in basketball but both teams need to have that in mind.

I watched the Aus upset. Mills overall defense and last minute shot was amazing. Newly, Anderson and Ingles for Aus were superb.

All great points Skangles. I have no idea who will win between Spain and Brazil. They both want to lose. Brazil is beter at losing so I'm going with a Spanish win.

The Tunisia score does not surprise me. Tunisia has been the surprise team of the tourney. They have great athleticism and energy.

This is a quote from Kobe Bryant's facebook.

Quote:Tough game vs a very well balanced and coached team from Lithuania. They executed their game plan perfectly. Slow the game down, create a lot of foul situations and spread the floor with timely shooting. We responded to the challenge by creating a lot of turnovers and getting out on the break. We felt we had a mismatch with LBJ being defended by their 4 man, so we gave him the ball and told him to attack. That's exactly what he did and we came away with a gritty W. We should have another fun one vs Argentina next Can't wait.

I couldn't watch Spain vs Brazil because they weren't showing it in my hotel room. However they were showing the US vs Canada women's football semifinal which was an absolutely spectacular match (watch the highlights) so it worked out for the best. At least they are showing the US vs Argentina now.

Was Spain obviously tanking? I saw that they were winning in the first half.
