Player of the Week:
Darjus Lavrinovic (Real Madrid): 32 points (8-12 FG, 14-17 FT), 11 rebounds
The surprise of the week has to be Khimki beating Real in OT, despite an excellent performance by Lavrinovic. Unfortunately for Real, only Lavrinovic and Rimantas Kaukenas (22 points) showed up for the game. Their starting 5 (Real veteran Louis Bullock and new additions Velickovic, Hansen, Prigioni and Garbajosa) combined for just 23 points, with only Garbajosa getting past the 5 point mark (with 7).
Lietuvos Rytas's win in their return to the EL over Efes Pilsen was surprising as well, especially since the Turks added a host of stars during the summer including Igor Rakocevic, Boki Nachbar, Preston Shumpert, Bootsy Thornton and Daniel Santiago, who joined last season's holdover Charles Smith.
Roma got a strong game from new addition Winston Kennedy (18 points) and easily disposed of Caja Laboral at home, opening a 19 point lead by the end of the 3rd quarter.
Partizan fell apart in the 4th quarter at home and couldn't hold off Unicaja, who were lead by new additions Joel Freeland (19 points) and Georgios Printezis (16 points, 8/8 FG).
Zalgiris, who saw the return of new-old stars Travis Watson (8 points, 14 rebounds) and Marcus Brown (16 points), both of whom spent last season in Israel, held ASVEL Basket to just 52 points and started off what they hope will be a much better campaign than last season's on the right foot.
EWE Baskets beat Euroleague staple Asseco Prokom in their Euroleague debut. Rickey Paulding (23 points) and Jekel Foster (20 points) lead the Germans, who fended off Qyntel Woods (23 points, 14 rebounds) and new Polish citizen David Logan (15 points).
Panathinaikos and CSKA had to sweat in order to beat AJ Milano and Maroussi. CSKA needed a game winner from Viktor Khryapa to prevent the Greeks from winning in their Euroleague debut.
Finally, Montepaschi, Barcelona, Maccabi and Olympiacos faced no difficulty in their easy wins over Cibona, Fener-Ulker, Olimpija and Orleanaise. Cibona found themselves in the record books after managing to score just 40 points at home, an all-time EL low. Barcelona showed an amazingly balanced attack, with only one player (new addition Pete Mickeal- 26 points) scoring more than 10 points, and all 11 players getting on the scoreboard with at least 3 points. Oly saw strong EL debuts from Linas Kleiza (23 points, 9/14 FG, 9 rebounds) and Von Wafer (10 points, 3/5 FG in 16 minutes), who joined the team from the NBA in the offseason. Maccabi needed just two excellent perfomances (Alan Anderson with 25 points, Andrew Wisniewski with 19) to dispose of lowly Olimpija in NOKIA Arena.
