Group stage prediction
#1
Let's make some predictions. I'll put my opinion and will wait for yours.

Group stage should rank like this, IMO:

A.

Argentina (The quality of starting lineup is huge- Scola, Nacioni, Delfino, Quinteros. Even if Manu won't play, they are so dangerous).

Serbia (This team might surprise again, but IMO this year they will lack extra leadership while all their players are still under progression).

Australia (If they will bring Nielsen, Bogut, A. Baynes they will have very solid frontline. That might be enough to overcome some team of the group)

Germany (All depends on Dirk. If he'll play, they have Kaman as well. In this case I rank Germany was more dangerous).

Angola (always quality, dangerous and competitive though always lacking discipline and extra qualities for big goals).

Jordan (Sorry, I don't have a picture of this team. You should help me here. I heard they are pretty competitive though).

B.

USA (Well, even if they won't get all the biggest names they will run fast and jump high anyway).

Slovenia (Depeneds who will play, but they have promissing things like Lorbek, Dragic was potential leaders and a great list of quality players).

Croatia (IMO, this team might dominate in this decade later on- Ukic, M. Delaš, Zubcic. A. Tomič- nice generation coming. Now they will be competitive with Ukič, Tomas, Popovič, Barač, but I doubt this will be anough for big goals).

Brazil (Depends what they bring. Nene, Barbosa, Varejao would mean something promising. They will be competitive that's for sure).

Tunisia (You should advise me how to rank these two last teams).

Iran (Judging from Olympics they might be dangerous, but nothing really more I guess (?)).

C.

Turkey (The home court will mean a lot for Turkey. If they'll bring Hedo and Iliasova they will have enough leadership. Will be highly tough to overcome them).

Greece (The possible comeback of DD and Papaloukas might bring them to another level while other players despite Spanoulis don't show too many signs of huge progression. Sill on of the most solid and equal teams in international arena. With a smart coach surely <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />)

Russia (Kirilenko, Khriapa and even Holden should be here. That means a nightmare for some powehouses some particular day. More over, new young players is coming - Mazgov, S. Kaun. They will be fucking hard under the boards <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />)

Puerto Rico (Can't say much about their current power, but they always have quality offensive players. Arroyo, Sontiago, Ayuso are coming?New talents?)

Cote d'Ivoire

D.

Spain (Pau Gasol will likely miss this show, but they have everything they need to compete with any team).

Lithuania (Depends on what kind of players Lithuania will bring in the backcourt. The come back of Jasikevičius and Kaukėnas would mean a lot).

France (NBA type of European team might play very well as well as to fail any construction and team play schemes. They will have qualities, that's for sure).

Lebanon (They will have a lot of motivation that for sure. That's why I hope they will qualify)

Canada (They should bring Nash to make something, but that won't happen I guess).

New Zealand (From what I heard their potential is limited, but you never know).

It'd be good to know the final squads before making predictions but from what we know now your predictions seem to be right. The only correction I would make is put Iran above Tunisia. Iran clearly has way more experience and better players. Unless I missed some Tunisian players.

I'm not sure about Turkey taking first place even if they play at home. If they are able to cope with high expectations then they could be top of the group. Btw, you forgot to add China <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Wink' />

As much as I want Lithuania to do well but I think we might have a weaker team than expected and most importantly - no top level PG. So I'd swap Lithuania with France in Group D.

Canada has some quality players but they already failed Olympic Qualifying Tournament due to problems inside the team. So I think it's possible that Lebanon, Canada and New Zealand could finish in any order. Though I would rank as the best team among these three.

Yeah, Iran has NBA player and I remember Lithuania had problems in first two quarters with them at Olympics. The only thing I also don't know much about Tunisia. They might surprise <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

How could I miss China? I don't it will be easy for them to fight without Yao most likely.

Yeah, things don't look good at PG line for Lithuania while Šaras is a big question. Still, I believe he can play well, it's just all these injuries. On other hand, even the addition of Kaukėnas and Gecevičius already would a lot. I'm not a big fan of Kalnietis, waiting for new players will step in <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

Well, looking at the given time we should mention few important changes that might really effect the WC:

Bogut injured badly and he will skip WC most likely, that leaves Australia without their guy to go.

Good news for Argentina while their best players- Nacioni, Scola, Delfino- seem to be positive about participation. More over, Manu is geeting new contract and that means more hope to see him in action.

I think fans of France should be positive as never while their NBA players seems to come up with great performances lately. A lot will depend on Parker, but they already have two more world class perimeter players- Batum and Beaoubois, more over there's good rumours about De Colo. Than France might have a real force under the boards with Joakim Noah. This means promising things (at least on the paper), if all will come.

Croatian fans might be celebrating the brake-out of one of the most promising European centers Ante Tomič. His game play reminds P. Gasol a lot and it would be strange if he wouldn't get a decent role in WC for Croatia. His future is really bright.

Predictions about Serbia for the group stage... Hm... They can certainly beat all the teams from the group, no doubt. But I don't know will they play the best basket or will the whole group calculate so that they don't play with USA in the next round. That would create quite a mess in the group if all think that way.

Most likely USA will be B1 team, so there won't be needed to much of calculations <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' /> As for Serbia, I believe Argentina will be too experienced and too much quality for Serbia this summer, and if Serbia will be A2, than you might face Spain D1 at quarterfinals. I'm not wishing that for you though <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

Me too. A couple of years ago it seemed like they was nothing left after Dirk, now there are great hopes. Of course another Dirk won't be produced, but a national team in the mold of the early 90s could be forming.

maybe even a better one. btw i am starting to think that maybe i like a team with 5-6 very good players, better than a team with 1 superstar and a bunch of lower level players. Of course a role model like dirk (one of my three fav players ever) will be greatly missed, but in any case german bball won't be dead

I don't know. Recently, by watching same Partizan's players from last few seasons playing for NT, fighting for their first games in NT, they looked very good. Now, I am watching this year's young Serbian players and they do the same. So I started to think that desire of the youngsters can overthrow the experience. just my opinion.

And, i don't know, I would like to see this team in the top 8, definitely, but I in secret, I am hoping for a medal <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Biggrin' />
