Preparation Games
#1
Post here everything related to preparation games ahead of World Championship in Turkey.

2010-08-20 Spain vs. Lithuania in Madrid, Spain

2010-08-21 Lithuania vs. USA in Madrid, Spain

2010-08-22? Spain vs. USA in Madrid, Spain

The date of Spain vs. USA games is my guess but it seems to be the right one. Lithuania will also host Germany among other games.

Who saw the friendly vs. Cyprus yesterday on NET?

It was a good practice run for Hellas, who got to stretch its' legs in an official game. As usual, things were slow to begin with, and the pace definitely picked up with Diamandidis entrance to the team (he came off the bench). Starting five were Sofo, V-Span, Perperoglou, Fotsis and Prindezis. Obviously Cyprus could never have been a threat, but it was a good start for the team to start working on certain things bit by bit.

Everyone seemed to be in good form, except maybe for Fotsis who seemed a little shaky, fumbling the ball, etc. It was also really refreshing to see that Tsartsaris is back on solid form again, not seeming to have any problems from his old injuries, he was also the top scorer for the team. On top of that, Prindezis was also showing to have matured into a much brainier player, he wasn't just like a bull let loose in a fine china shop, LOL! The two lads Papanikolaou and Pappas also had some good minutes and tried to please Kazlauskas to show that they deserved a spot on the team. Time will tell!

What do you guys think? <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

I will probably miss all the games as I work at nights (and mornings, and afternoons)... but Cyprus was never a serious opponent...

The games vs Russia, Croatia and Germany though will be more useful.

I think this refreshed NT is even better than the previous ones... Tsartsaris back in form is great, a PF/C with tons of experience and good shot, rebounding... Spanoulis and Diamantides left alone to lead the team (eith Papaloukas), athletic guys covering the 3-4 positions (Printezis, Fotsis, Perpe, Kaimakoglou) and monsters in the paint with Big Sofo and Bourousis (when they are in mood...)

Lol, I made the initial post about Hellas friendlies before the WC because there was no speculation about performance in our game. Can the title of the post be fixed accordingly?

This should only be about Hellas friendlies.

Obviously, we are not caring about the opponents in friendlies, what is needed is to play some serious games to work on harder aspects of our game with some difficult opposition so that we may prepare better.

Glad to also see that Sofo isn't trying to dunk anymore with two hands, and just going for the one handed one which is easier. At least he won't be missing baskets that way! LOL

On paper, even though Papaloukas is not on the team, it does look like the best Greek team ever. However, 2008 was also the best Greek team ever (up until that point) and it failed. They should have won a bronze medal at the Olympics and instead finished 5th. Mainly due to poor coaching decisions by Giannakis.

This team is a little bit stronger than the 2008 team (assuming Kazlauskas does not make any more strange roster decisions and there are no serious injuries), but the issue still remains of will they perform to the capabilities or not?

Will the coach do a good enough job or not? Kazlauskas is a better coach than Giannakis but he still isn't perfect.

This team should medal. They are better than every other team except Spain and the US. Serbia and Argentina are close, but this Greek team I think is a bit better than them. And Spain and the US this time are not unbeatable.

The US has a young and inexperienced team and Spain does not have Pau. So even the gold isn't impossible (unlikely) but not impossible. Looking at the schedule if they lose to Turkey they might get the US at the quarterfinals. If they beat Turkey they might get Argentina or Serbia at the semifinals and the US or Spain at the finals, if they make it.

The game against Turkey will be really tough and pivotal.
