As a Greek (right?) you should know that one famous Greek philosopher - Plutarch - dedicated essay for vegetarianism "On Eating flesh" back to ancient world. All Greek world was occupied with disputing about this ethical question. And that's not even real roots. The Hindu Upanishands (1000 BC) was the doctrine of reincarnation, so they opposed for easting meat (animals). Not too mention than many of great minds were/are vegetarians.
I have to say "vegetarianism" is one of current global modes, but in this case I could proudly call my self a poser
