I was staying in Sultanahmet actually, although it's quite a cheesy tourist area, and expensive,a lot of the stuff that was sold there was crap Chinese imports. Precious little actual Turkish products were on sale. My gf wanted to buy a silk scarf, and the Chinese imports were around 20 EUR, whereas the Turkish ones were well over 70 <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dry.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
Next time round I go, I'll get my friend from Kocaeli or from some parts of Istanbul to take me around where the locals go because I really don't like cheesy tourist area CRAP, designed to milk money out of you, for mediocre/shoddy service and quality. As well as getting my balls busted about buying F***ING carpets from so-and-so's cousin, and then getting pissed because I got pissed with them being rude especially in the presence of my girlfriend. I do have to say however, that some of the finest sweets I've eaten were in Istanbul, do you know that chain vakasimo, Oszut? <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
Man they made the greatest profiteroles I've ever eaten!!!! Absolutely perfect texture and taste. Apparently they used a kind of chocolate I've never heard of before, 'Venetian chocolate', and it was unbelievably awesome! <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
I would go back to off of Taksim Square for those profiteroles once more <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/crazy.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

I had some foreigner friends about 10 years ago about because of my job at the time and they told me a concept "Sultanahmet Tax". Yes tourists are being milked brutally , I know that. Iknow chinese goods too but there are genuine goods too as you already mentioned.
Ãzsüt , of course I know taht chain, my wife loves it, I like Mado more, though. Listen if you come back to Taksim again eat profiterol at Ä°nci. It is an old 19 century cafe , unique tradition great taste. You should try it.
