Eurobasket 1995 finals, Serbia& Montenegro vs. Lithuania
#1
I managed to get my hands on this notorious final. I only just became a teen when this final was played, I read about it, but never managed to watch it. Djordjevic had an insane game with 9/12 3p!!!!! Danilovic had some massive 'show your nuts' attempts, including two dunks in Sabonis's face. Divac had a good game too, but simply couldn't contain Sabonis enough without getting himself fouled out of the game. Almost the same would have happened to Rebraca who was unfortunate to get an elbow in the face after a low-post dunk from Sabonis. Bodiroga was very positive as well, although he didn't really step up in the second half of the game. Who the hell was Obradovic the player? A relative of Zeljko the assistant coach? <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rofl3.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Rofl3' />

From what I saw, Lithuania was severely betrayed by the referees, that SOB Tolliver from the US. No surprise there was the SOB Greek ref Pitsilkas there, but luckily he didn't make all of the bad calls.

Marciulionis was just unstoppable. Crazy 2p accuracy, with 2/2 3p shots as well. He was veritably on fire that day. Karnisovas too was excellent all round, making some 'muscling in' and clincher shots. Of course we can't forget the miracle of nature, Sabonis who was the ultimate fear of the Serbs who hacked away at him, clotheslining him, and using every dirty trick in the book to get him out of his game. This was evident in his 2p percentage which was around 5/11 if I remember correctly. Still his passing ability was just something phenomenal. Into 5-7 minutes of the game, who could forget that low post receive-the-pass-and-bat-it-to-your-teammate-who's-behind-your-back pass from a man over 2.20 m in height?! <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Biggrin' />

The bad calls without being given fouls to Sabonis, or calling charges TWICE on Marciulionis were a daylight robbery, and it was no surprise that the whole Lithuanian bench was ready to get up and walk off (after the charge called on Lukminas's drive from defence played by Savic who didn't remain stationary long enough) at this farce called a European Championship final.

The refs were too relaxed in letting the game get too physical, and this led to an overall drop in the quality of the final. The game too was very individual mostly made up of 1 on 1's and not enough team play.

Opinions? <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

I watched it... I remember the crowd boowing Serbia and referees... and for Greeks to disapprove Serbs it needs a lot of effort...

It was the good ol' Serbian lobby days with Stankovic and rest... I remember Djordjevic having something like 42-45 points which was unreal and Sabonis being pissed off at some point and hitting his head against the backboard of the basket...
Respect and thanks for everything:

Alvertis, Bodiroga, Jasikevicius, Radja, Wilkins, Vrankovic, Fotsis, Rebraca, Kattash, Gentile, Koch, Middleton, Kutluay, Rogers, Papadopoulos, Becirovic, Tomasevic, Siskauskas, Pekovic, Lakovic, Vujanic, Chatzivrettas, Maljkovic, Spanoulis and many more to follow in the near future.

Yes, there were only Serbia and Montenegro of all Ex-Yu states, but the name of the country was Yugoslavia until 2003. when it only changed name to Serbia and Montenegro. Only a few years back those two separated creating two states.

Djordjevic played the game of his life and it was crucial moment. I remember after this game most of people in Lithuania blamed him with doping, eating some pills or something <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' /> He really wasn't that good player, but he had his game of this life. It's pity, because that year Sabas and Marčiulionis were ready to eat Yugoslavia alive no- matter their longer bench, but "Djordjevic miracle" happened and mediocre player compered with two mentioned before stole the show. Refs were OK actually, made couple of mistakes, but nothing special - Lithuanians got to nervous. One of the best finals I ever saw, anyway!

After couple of minutes spent like this <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Ohmy' />

And couple more like this <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rofl3.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Rofl3' />

Here is your answer:

Sasa Djordjevic was elected as the one of 50 men who contributed to Europe's basketball.

He had a lot of doped moments like that one, so dont try to to make that as "miracle"

Try - 1992 Joventut - Partizan final of European Championship

or 1997 Yugoslavia - Croatia game

or any game in Barcelona and Real Madrid jersey, when he was doing miracle to take Spanish championships wherever he played.

Or try to compare what did he managed to do while he was playing for National team and what did Marchwhatever managed to do.

Or maybe you are right to think that he had a game of his life, how else to explain that you lost by a better team thought..

Djordjevic is just Djordjevic compered to Sabonis and Marčiulionis. If the latter would have had European career, no-one would bark about Djordjevič. That's my opinion anyway.

Agree, Djordjevic is just Djordjevic, but that one is one of the biggest basketball names in Europe!

I don't think it needed a lot of effort for the greek crowd to disapprove Serbs. Greece had lost at the semifinal against Yugoslavia, so it was quite expected for Greeks to react this way especially since they got help from the referees at the final!
