Euroleague draw 2008
#1
1st Seed________2nd Seed____3rd Seed_______4th Seed______5th Seed_______6th Seed

The best group for Zalgiris would be: Maccabi, Partizan, Lottomatica, Zalgiris, Le Mans, Alba. Though they will probably get much tougher opponents.

What if PAO gets in the same group with CSKA and Barca. Should be some great games.

lol. I am not underrating them. But Maccabi will always be an offensive team and that's better for Zalgiris rather than defensive minded teams. So there's more chances to get one win against Maccabi than CSKA. Anyway, Zalgiris will get a group of death as always.

We were pretty lucky this year in the draw. I think after many Euroleague season, this is the time to finish in the top of the group. Go THRYLOS, go! <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Biggrin' />

I think all groups are very balanced, there is no group which is specialy stronger than the other- no death group. Now I'm glad twice that AP didn't accept Oly's offer I think I might cry if I'll see him playing against maccabi and wearing red jersy...

I won't be so glad my friend, rosters ain't finished and Oly (which made some spectecular roster moves) is still very new team and it would take it some time to pull out it's best. So.. hold u'r horses <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

Well, I meant that we have many chances to finish in the top of the group, not that will finish first, for sure. I'm sure coach Giannakis respects very much Maccabi Tel-Aviv (so do I), and to be honest, I think it's the only candidate able to grab the first position in the group from Olympiakos, no offense to Unicaja of course... <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

And about Anthony Parker, just keep a small basket ( as we say here in Greece <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Biggrin' /> ). I don't think his situation is over for granted. But of course there are few possibilities from our side, right now...

About the "new team" issue, I have some objections. Thodoris Papaloukas and Nikola Vujcic ( I think ), they will not have a SINGLE problem to adjust and adapt Giannakis' coaching style and gaming plan. They are both MASTERS of the pick 'n roll ( Theo in creation and Nikola in finishing ), and Giannakis is using this type of offense many time in Greece ( with Theo and DD to Sofo ), so he will use it to Olympiakos too. These 2, will be vital part of the team, in the very first game, that's for sure. For the other 3-4 players ( Erceg, Halperin, Milosevic and the SF from the NBA ), I'm not sure yet, but they will need their time to prove their worth. But to be honest, I feel that the team will be 100% ready to face Maccabi in Tel-Aviv ( I think the first game between the two will take place in Tel-Aviv, in the 3rd week, right ? ).

Don't take me wrong, but I cannot see how Maccabi will replace Halperin, Vujcic, Morris and maybe Fizer, with equal or better players. There are no such players in the free market, and I don't really think that your chairman is allocating to "brake" some contracts. Can somebody provide me, the full roster of Maccabi Tel-Aviv, at this time ? I only know, that they braught back, Green...

I agree with most of what u said besides few things:

1)Giankais is using lots of PNR.. hamm ok.. but Giankais is known for a very restric basket ball, controled, with not much of imagination. u'r right Pap and Vujcic are indid masters of the PNR but bball is much more than one drill. keep in mind that Nikola gave his best days and he's (in my mind) a down hill player, any way I hope for the best for him.

2)Oly got 13-14 playres in it's roster, most of them very much likes the ball and likes to play a lot.. so.. I predict much of sad faces on the red bench, things like this leads to bad athmosphir.

3)for AP for this season he's not coming back to europe that's for sure.. maybe next year (PLZ GOD MAKE IT MACCABI!!!) <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

4)As for Maccabi, u'r absolutly right, it wwill be hard and maybe not possible to find a replacment for Vujcic or Morris as for Yotam, he's a good player but I promisse u he's not that great, Tre Simmons will be much batter guaranty! <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Wink' /> and lets not forget that Tal Burstein is still here (was injured most season but will be back).

5)Maccabi still got 2 more signings to do (PG and PF) and a larg amount of money is being released to do so with Vujcic departure and Yotam's buy out paid by Oly. Only after we can talk about Oly maccabi match up (I know Halperin won't get a warm welcome, Vujcic is an other story)<img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />.

Maccabi's roster for now :

Tre Simmons, Jason Williams, Esteban Batista, Marcus Fizer,Dror hagag, Tal Burstein, Derick Sharp, Omri Caspi (will sign soon), Yaniv Green.

Well, I disagree in that part. I cannot remember any of his teams ( Maroussi and Greek national team ) playing restricted basketball, and only pick n' rolls. I think that part of Giannakis philosophy is, hard defense ( one court and full court ), fast passing game, side changing, pick n' roll, and of course, much inside game ( with Sofo and Vujcic, we will see much points in Oly's side, from the "paint" ). I also think, he will take advantage of Vujcic great ability to pass the ball outside ( to the guards mainly ), so Oly will have some more free 3 pointers ( with shooters like Macas(?), Greer, Halperin and maybe the American SF, it would be a great addition to Oly's gaming style ). About Vujcic now, his medical examinations showed us that he is 100% ready and it seems that he "exceed" his injury problems. We will see his form, asap, I think.

Well this is NOT true. Olympiakos has 1 star player in every position, and many players with a smaller role in the team, behind them. Take a look in the roster, and judge by yourself:

PG: Thodoris Papaloukas (star player), Teodosic, Milosevic (talents)

SG: Arvydas Macijauskas (star player and a real question mark), Lynn Greer, Kostas Vasiliades(?)

SF: Transfer from the NBA (star player), Panagiotis Vasilopoulos, Michalis Pelekanos (smaller role players)

PF: Giannis Bourousis (starting five player), Zoran Erceg, Giorgos Printezis (talents)

C: Nikola Vujcic (star player), Big Sofo (not 100% ready), Ian Vougioukas (talent)

The roles in the team, are more than obvious, and I don't really think there will be some kind of atmosphere issues in the locker room.
We will see. Just wait some more days ( until 10-12 of July ), so we can clear once and for all, this affair.
Halperin's role in the team, will surely "absorb" the 100% of him, in every game. I trust him much more than an american in the same position ( lets say Lynn Greer ).
5)Maccabi still got 2 more signings to do (PG and PF) and a larg amount of money is being released to do so with Vujcic departure and Yotam's buy out paid by Oly. So, I see that Dror Hagag is back. Tre Simmons is a quality addition to Maccabi's roster, and Green's return will give some more power to your frontline. But still, I think that Tre Simmons will not be as stable as Halperin was, Yaniv Green has nothing to do with Nikola Vujcic or Terens Morris. And do not forget, that NOT only Olympiakos will be a new team. Maccabi almost changed the 50% of last year's roster.

As I said before, AT THIS TIME ( we will have a more clear view of the two teams, when the transfer period will be over ), Olympiakos is better from the last year, and Maccabi is not. But as you said, Maccabi will do some more transfers, but Olympiakos will have some more additions too...

I must say U'r the niciest Oly fan I have ever met. most of Oly fans would propably take my words as a direct insult <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' /> cheers for that! <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/thup.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

U'r right about Maccabi ain't coming stronger and Oly is, as for Yotam- Simmons We'll just have to wait and see.The thing is with Maccabi is it never signs high payed playres, most time maccabi founds them "under the radar" and brings them to greatness (there are exeptions as Sharas and Mcdonald) like Parker (inured list in NBA), baston from DKV befor ULEB good days, nate Huffman and most recent Terence Morris who discovered as most efficient player. So when Maccabi loses players and bringing unknows, u can't really tell how strong the team will be.Sure there were falls like Noel Felix and bufford <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

for Vujcic health- he was 100% healthy at the beginig of last season too, and later started to break apart, and thats after he had an entire summer of rest.. so hammm watch up...

and u'r right about the roster stuff, when I think of it u do have 1 star in any position, but many "stars on way"/"stars wanna" be on the bench.

No matter what the match up of Oly - Maccabi is going to be one of the best match ups in the regular season I hope for a good game. <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/basketball.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Basketball' />

Thanks for the welcome !

Personally it does look like that group B has 3 "Premium" (I'd use that in lack of a better term) teams (Sienna, Barca and Pana). Group C has only one (Tau), Group D has two (CSKA and maybe Real). Group A - I'd really like to say two (Oly and Maccabi) but It's difficult to tell at this point if Maccabi is going to be a factor in the league this year (Sign JWill Already !!!!!!!!). This is based on history, new signings and personal opinion.
