VTB United League 2010/2011 - TalkBasket - Apr 14, 2010

There will be at least 12 teams in the league next season. The managers of the league hope to have 16 or 18 teams already next year. VTB league should also expand to Belarus and Finland by including a single team from each of these countries.

Quote:Lietuvos Rytas and Asseco Prokom to join VTB United League

The new VTB United League is expected to expand even further next season after the agreement between the league and two new teams has been reached. Lietuvos Rytas are set to become the second Lithuanian team in the league while Polish champions Asseco Prokom will become the first team from Poland. Rytas were wanted by VTB already last year but the club turned down the offer because the new league 'was based on the former Soviet league'. Though this season Rimas Kurtinaitis, head coach of Rytas told to the media that the club would benefit from participating in VTB league due to the higher level of competition compared to the Baltic Basketball League for instance. This thought reached the ears of the management of the club obviously.

Asseco Prokom had a good season in Euroleague as they reached the play-offs only falling to Olympiacos later. The addition of the Polish champions to the VTB leagues will add even more quality to the competition.

VTB league featured eight teams this season: CSKA Moscow, Khimki, Unics Kazan and Ural Great (all Russia), Azovmash (Ukraine), Kalev (Estonia), Zalgiris (Lithuania) and VEF Riga (Latvia). The Final Four was hosted in Kaunas. CSKA beat Unics in the final while Zalgiris claimed the third place by winning over Khimki.

VTB United League 2010/2011 - stefans - Apr 15, 2010

This is very good news for basketball from East Europe.

Expanding to Belarus and Finland will development of basketball in these countries. We are witnesses that in Europe is builted regional leagues(Adriatic League if i am right is first regional league, than Baltic League,Balkan league and VTB League). It's very important that this leagues exsist.Next will be best to put Nort-West Europe.

My opinion:

Adriatic league - Serbia,Croatia,Slovenia,Montenegro,BIH,Czech Republic and (FYROM)to put.Maybe Austria to comlete region.

Balkan League - Serbia,Montenegro,Bulgaria,Romania,FYROM - these are low quality teams from this countries exept(Romania and FYROM).With Hungary...

Baltic League - Lithuania,Latvia,Estonia,Sweden and to put (Denmark).

VTB League - Russia,Ukraine,Lithuania,Latvia,Estonia and Poland,Belarus,Finland ...Moldova,Slovakia...

**Also new Leagues:

Benelux League - Holland,Belgium,Luxemburg.. (Switzerland) that will be very good option.

North League: Great Britain with Ireland,Norway and Island..

With these Leagues European Basketball will grow. For now we will see if will be make another leagues in years that comes. <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Biggrin' />

Quote:New VTB League format shaping up

According to Russian "SportExpress" the new VTB League format is steadily shaping up and will take its final form in the General Assembly of the League in early July. Read what the League's General Director, Andrey Shirokov, told in the interview to the Russian newspaper-website.

According to Shirokov the main change will be that of increasing the teams from eight to twelve. The teams will be divided in the same way as last season, in two groups. The twelve teams will then play a round-robin system, each in their own group.

After that the top team of each group will automatically get a ticket to the competition's Final Four while the second and the third teams of each group will face each other to gain the last tickets to the Final Four (Group A second team vs Group B third team and Group B second team vs Group A third team).

Although it is not known yet which Russian teams will participate it will probably be CSKA Moscow, Khimki, UNICS Kazan and Lokomotiv Kuban. From the rest countries now, Lithuania will be represented by Zalgiris Kaunas (Lietuvos Rytas has yet to decide whether they will apply to play next season or not), two Ukrainian clubs (probably Budivelnyk Kiev and Azovmash Mariupol), Estonia will be sending Kalev Tallinn and finally Latvia will go with VEF Riga.

As said by Shirokov himself, both Kalev and VEF have pledged to significantly raise their budgets to become more competitive in the upcoming league.

Poland have also expressed their interest in participating in the league, with two teams, but so far only Prokom meets the criteria and should be a lock for next league.

The remaining two available spots (of which one is reserved for Lietuvos Rytas should they wish to join) will be sought after by several clubs such as Minsk-2006 (Belarus), Tartu (Estonia), Siauliai (Lithuania), Ventspils and Barons (Latvia) and surprisingly enough Honka from Finland who could be chosen should they bring strong sponsorship deals on the table.

Lietuvos Rytas is like a capital-city girl. Playing hard to get just to keep up appearances, but she wants it badly and she will give in at the end <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Tongue' />

VTB United League 2010/2011 - Sagenas - Jun 15, 2010

Jonas Vainauskas have said that he knows some guys from VTB and by his wishes in VTB games that heads of league would firstly talk in English, not in Russian as it was last season (last season VTB Final Four was in Kaunas, "Sports Hall" which is very old and there everyone felt like in soviet times...)

Also I have heard that Å iauliai have been thinking what to select - EuroCup or VTB. <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' /> Well...it seems that next season may be interesting. <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

Vainauskas said that Rytas will accept the invitation only if:

1) The official language of VTB is changed from Russian to English;

2) The league will have at least one team from the outside of former soviet region as Rytas will not play in an ex-soviet league. That's way we see Honka among the potential additions to the league.

Regarding Å iauliai, they will make a mistake if they choose to play only in one league. Of course they will get knocked out in Eurocup early before facing any big teams which is guaranteed in the VTB league. However, both VTB and Eurocup offer higher competition level than ordinary LKL game. Plus participating in European competition give more prestige to the team (since when do Lithuanian teams care about their prestige though).

VTB United League 2010/2011 - Black Urum - Jun 21, 2010

The number of Russian clubs in VTB could raise from four to six.

VTB United League 2010/2011 - straight forward - Oct 2, 2010

I have no doubt Latvians, Estonians, Ukrainians and specially fans from Finland and Belarus are looking forward for the season.

Now when Žalgiris and Rytas won't play in BBL regular season, this league is becoming important for Lithuanian. I think I will enjoy it better than BBL in previous years.

CSKA, Khimki, Žalgiris, Rytas, Unics, Prokom are all big names. Gonna be interesting.

VTB United League 2010/2011 - Black Urum - Oct 2, 2010

It would be even more interesting if the league's board somehow managed to show this league in other countries other than the participating ones...

You mean broadcasting? L.Rytas.tv will broadcast some games with Rytas and Žalgiris (like Rytas- CSKA this Wednesday), that means online stream. I guess some other streams will be available, from Russia specially.

VTB United League 2010/2011 - Black Urum - Oct 2, 2010

Yeah, if anyone is actively interested he can find links...

I meant something that will aim at passive basketball fans... for example pushing the vtb tv package on cheap prices to some networks who are looking for "garbage" packages to cover air-time...

I doubt it will be officially sold to tvs in other countries than the participating ones...

VTB United League 2010/2011 - Black Urum - Oct 6, 2010

Any links for CSKA-Rytas game? It's at 19:15 I think.

I hope either Rytas or CSKA will do their job before 4th quarter because I'm going out to play BB at that time <img src='http://www.talkbasket.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

Anzulovic is pathetic coach in my point of view. Pain in the ass...

straight forward what you think of Lietuvos Rytas-UNICS game today?

I don't understand why the bookies give Rytas as favourites with such a margin.

I think there are three reasons: Rytas is Euroleague's team, they playing at home and they had a close game against Siena (one of Euroleague's elite teams). Finally they desperately need victory. While Unics probably isn't better team than last year and their roster might be a little bit shorter (last year they had a privilege to keep Štombergas on the bench...). Personally, I expect good performance by Rytas because it's time and it slowly comes to the "now or never" for Trifunovič as well. They have good backourt now, Trifunovič should find the way to get the best of Gecevičius and El- Amin. That's the key for the good and constant play of Rytas, IMO.

The same links above should work for the game, 18:10 CET

Rytas- Unics 85:87

Interesting game. Popovic and Lampe's due completely destroyed Rytas. I don't understand why the hell Rytas coaching staff think that they can play against centers with farwards...Valančiūnas at least tried to play in defence.

I like Trifunovic temper, but so far his offensive schemes is not working. All the offensive frame comes of individual attempts and fast brakes. Probably Rytas will improve and will have addition (Nalga is not playing anymore, I think he'll be replaced as soon as there will be a good deal available), but it's so obvious that the release of Kurtinaitis was one damn stupid mistake by Vainauskas. Kurtinaitis build a very disciplined defence and couple of offensive plays that worked every single game. While current Rytas with Trifunivic still looks lost and he couldn't give a normal advice how the hell Rytas should play against p&r. Off course, the new coach still deserves more time.

VTB United League 2010/2011 - Black Urum - Oct 30, 2010

Plus UNICS is a better team.

I don't think so. Lampe isn't that super star. Popovič is unstable and played probably the best game I saw him playing (I don't understand why the hell he was barking on refs in Kaunas all the time instead of playing like that). Rytas is just in shitty situation. Kurtinaitis was producing way more quality BB with weaker roster.

Anyway, Unics won so they are stronger.
